Department of Biotechnology - Activities & Events conducted in year 2021-22


DRAWING AND ART COMPETITION

A drawing and art competition was organized with the theme “National Integration” as a way to celebrate Independence Day on online platform on 13th August, 2021. All the 8 participants’ posters portrayed the spirit of oneness. 


     

 

TRAINING AND AWARENESS PROGRAM FOR AYUSHMAN BHARAT & INDRADHANUSH YOJNA

As a part of TCSC's plan to support Prime minister's mission, a training and awareness program for Ayushman Bharat & Indradhanush Yojna was organized on 30th August, 2021. The objective of this activity was to promote the initiative of Govt. of India to various sections of society through students. The training program included screening of a documentary prepared by students along with a demonstration of the process of determining the eligibility for the scheme on the official government website by department alumnus and the beneficiary of the scheme, Mr. Amit Kumar Pandey. 45 students of the department were part of this initiative.





GUEST LECTURE WITH AN INDUSTRIAL PERSPECTIVE ON THE PROCESS OF PROTEIN PURIFICATION

An online guest lecture with an industrial perspective on the process of protein purification was organized on 31st August, 2021. The resource person, Dr. Sarita Kamat, a post doctorate fellow from Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, Mumbai; explained the multi-step procedure along with real-world life experiences which were insightful. Also, she had fruitful interactions with students for guidance on `Career in Science’. 72 student from department of Biotechnology, Botany and Zoology participated in the event.



`EUREKA 2021’ AND BIOCHROMA 2021

The flag-ship event of the department `Eureka 2021’ an Annual Inter-Collegiate Presentation Competition based on Innovative ideas was organised on 17th September, 2021. Twenty two participants in 11 teams presented their ideas in the form of presentations. The ideas stimulated intellectual discussions and thorough brain storming which was enjoyed by the participants and the audience alike. The eminent judge Ms. Amruta Walwaikar, department alumnus and Biotech professional interacted with all the participants and gave her valuable feedback. 

The Inter-Collegiate art Competition Biochroma 2021 was held on 28th September, 2021, which was a unique artwork exhibition based on scientific ideas. The aim of this event was to illuminate, illustrate and inspire the artistic abilities of the students. Different topics such as Multiverse, Time travel were included which developed a keen interest in students. 30 participants from different departments and other colleges were part of the event. 




           






A TWO-DAY HANDS-ON WORKSHOP ON MOLECULAR BIOLOGY TECHNIQUES (PCR AND ELECTROPHORESIS)

A two-day Hands-on Workshop on Molecular Biology Techniques (PCR and Electrophoresis) was jointly organised by the Department of Biotechnology, TCSC Research Committee and IQAC in association with HiMedia Laboratories Pvt. Ltd on 16th and 17th December, 2021.The workshop manual was released by the honourable Principal Dr.(Mrs.) C.T.Chakraborty. The resource person Mr. Sumit Tawde from HiMedia lab gave a demonstration of the PCR machine and the apparatus for agarose gel electrophoresis. 68 students from Botany and Biotechnology departments, got a hands-on experience in a number of techniques including Autopipette handling, PCR reaction mixture preparation, gel loading and gel analysis. Considering the overwhelming response of the students, the workshop was conducted again on 7th April, 2022 especially for 19 post graduate students of Botany and Zoology departments. 







MINDSPACE 2022

To introduce an element of fun along with science, an event Mindspace 2022, unravel the Mystery’ was organised on 10th and 11th February, 2022.  Thirty five students participated in the crime Scene investigation competition coupled with the scientific quiz round for solving a crime mystery. 








GUEST LECTURE ‘IPR AND PATENT LAWS’

A guest lecture ‘IPR and Patent Laws’ was organised on 26th February, 2022. The resource person, Ms. Nidhi Bangera, a practicing lawyer at the Bombay High Court and associate with Asian Patent Bureau explained the laws, the difference between patent, copyright and trademark and their respective registration processes. 71 students attended the guest lecture.


GUEST LECTURE ON “RECENT TRENDS IN VIROLOGY”

A guest lecture on “Recent trends in virology” was delivered by Dr. Sandeepan Mukherjee, a scientific Officer and Head, Department of Virology (Haffkine Institute) on 10th March, 2022. He highlighted the details of the curated research database on virology and its recent trends. 60 students attended this guest lecture.

   



‘BIOTECH-SPECTRUM’

The Department released three issues of e-bulletin ‘Biotech-Spectrum’ to inculcate curiosity and nurture scientific writing skills of the learners.
