DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES


The Department of Environmental Studies successfully organized an Online Quiz Competition on 5th June 2025 to commemorate World Environment Day. The theme for this year was “Ending Plastic Pollution.” The event aimed to enhance awareness and promote sustainable practices among students. Conducted through Google Forms, the quiz witnessed an enthusiastic response, with 156 learners participating across various streams. This activity was conducted under CARRE Event.

Winners: 1st – Darshan Jain (S.Y.B.Com–9097), 2nd – Ragini Vikas Pandey (T.Y.B.Com–8468), 3rd – Amal Siddiqui (M.Sc Part II–5632).

On 11th July 2025, the Department of Environmental Studies organized a Poster Making Competition themed "World Population Day." The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from 126 degree college students, who displayed their creativity and commitment to population issues through their artwork. The event successfully combined artistic expression with environmental advocacy, promoting greater awareness of population explosion.

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has organized National Students Paryavaran Competition (NSPC) under the aegis of Paryavaran Sanrakshan Gatividhi. The objective of this programme is to succeed in creating awareness amongst students to comprehend in depth the complexity of the looming dangers of uncontrolled climate devastation. The teachers motivated the students to take the quiz in their respective lecture at 8.35am in the classroom on 14th August 2025. The students could complete the quiz and they received the online participation certification for the same. Total 650 learners participated in the said event from Science and Commerce faculty.


The Department of Environmental Studies of Thakur College of Science & Commerce (Empowered Autonomous) successfully organized a Pledge, Signature Campaign and awareness through Social Media under Swachhata Pakhwada 2025 on 15th September 2025 in line with the directives of the University Grants Commission (UGC), Ministry of Education, Government of India. The event was held under the inspiring theme “Swachhata Se Samriddhi.” A total of 1140 learners enthusiastically participated in the campaign, taking a collective pledge to uphold cleanliness, sustainability, and responsible civic behavior in their daily lives. Following the pledge, the signature campaign provided students an opportunity to express their personal commitment to maintaining hygiene and contributing to a cleaner environment, thereby reinforcing the ideals of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.



The Department of Environmental Studies, Thakur College of Science and Commerce, organized an online guest lecture on “Urban Biodiversity and Conservation: Lessons from Sanjay Gandhi National Park” on 9th September 2025 at 5.00 pm, with enthusiastic participation from 93 first-year degree learners. Mr. Akash Hemant Mhadgut, Nature Education and Extension Officer at Sanjay Gandhi National Park, delivered an insightful session highlighting the importance of biodiversity conservation in urban spaces and the vital role SGNP plays as Mumbai’s green lung. 


On 16th September 2025, the Department of Environmental Studies organized a Field Visit to Kanheri Caves for F.Y.B.Com learners under the Indian Knowledge System (IKS) course. A total of 17 students participated in the visit, which focused on ancient Indian techniques of water management and conservation. Learners explored traditional rainwater harvesting systems and understood their relevance to modern sustainable practices. The activity provided valuable experiential learning, connecting classroom concepts with real-world environmental wisdom.


The Department of Environmental Studies successfully organized a Beach Cleanup Drive on 27th September 2025 at Juhu Beach, Mumbai, as part of its Environmental Awareness Initiative. The activity aimed to promote environmental responsibility, create awareness about marine pollution, and encourage students to contribute towards maintaining cleaner beaches and a healthier environment. The drive commenced at 7:00 AM onwards and witnessed active participation from learners who engaged in removing plastic waste, litter, and non-biodegradable materials from the shoreline. Students also took part in basic waste segregation and gained practical insights into the harmful effects of plastic pollution on marine life and coastal ecosystems. The event was conducted under the guidance and supervision of faculty members Dr. Priti Gupta and Dr. Prajakta Jadhav. A total of 26 learners from Degree Commerce (All Courses) participated enthusiastically. The activity proved to be impactful and educational, fostering environmental consciousness and a sense of social responsibility among learners. Conducted under CARRE Event.



.The Departments of Environmental Studies, Commerce, Economics, and PAFM jointly organized a Pledge for Unity Campaign on 14th November 2025 as part of the National Action Plan commemorating 150 years of Vande Mataram. The activity was conducted at 8:30 a.m. across classrooms of the Degree Science and Commerce streams. The campaign aimed to promote unity, harmony, and national integration among learners while honouring the legacy of the national song. A total of 1,318 learners actively participated and took the unity pledge. The initiative successfully instilled a sense of collective identity, cultural respect, and social responsibility among students.


.The Department of Environmental Studies successfully organized an Extempore Speech Competition on 10th December 2025 as part of the Bhasha Divas celebrations. The competition aimed to emphasize the significance of linguistic diversity, preservation of the mother tongue, and the role of language in connecting culture and society. The event was evaluated based on content, clarity of thought, language proficiency, confidence, and overall presentation. A total of 30 learners from the Degree College enthusiastically participated in the event. The activity proved to be meaningful and enriching, effectively integrating academic learning with cultural awareness and value-based education. Conducted under CARRE Event.

.The Departments of Environmental Studies and Law jointly organized an awareness session on “Laws for Women Protection” on 11th December 2025 in the Seminar Hall, in association with the Inner Wheel Club of Mumbai, Kandivali. The session aimed to sensitize learners about legal rights, safety measures, and protective mechanisms available to women. A total of 285 learners actively participated in the programme. The speakers, including Assistant Police Inspector Ms. Pooja Chavan and APR Raju Chaudhary Sir, shared valuable insights on women protection laws, cybersecurity, online frauds, and youth-related safety concerns. The session concluded with an interactive discussion, making the programme highly informative and impactful.

.The Department of Environmental Studies organized a one-day field visit to Govardhan Eco-Village on 15th December 2025 for first-year degree college learners. The visit aimed to provide experiential learning and first-hand exposure to sustainable living practices. A total of 40 learners actively participated in the educational tour. Students were introduced to key initiatives such as organic farming, rainwater harvesting, composting, recycling, renewable energy usage, and eco-friendly architecture. The interaction sessions enhanced learners’ understanding of environmental conservation and sustainable lifestyles. The visit effectively connected classroom learning with real-world applications.


                              

The Department of Environmental Studies organized an E-Waste Collection Drive on 16th December within the college campus. The initiative aimed to promote responsible disposal of electronic waste and enhance awareness about sustainable waste management. E-waste was collected from all departments of the Degree and Junior College. A total of 106.4 kg of e-waste was gathered during the drive. The collected material was safely handed over to Threco: The Recycling Company for scientific recycling. The activity encouraged environmental responsibility and sustainable practices among learners and staff.

The Departments of Environmental Studies, Commerce, Economics, and PAFM of Thakur College of Science and Commerce successfully organized a Tree Plantation Drive on 26th January 2026, reaffirming the institution’s commitment to environmental sustainability and climate responsibility. The initiative was conducted in the broader context of the college being honoured with the Climate Action Award for Institution by LEAP India, recognizing TCSC’s sustained contributions to climate action and environmental stewardship. The award acknowledged the college’s alignment with key national initiatives including Mission LiFE, Jal Jeevan Mission, Majhi Vasundhara Abhiyan, and Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. The plantation activity was held from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Municipal General Hospital. Degree college learners participated enthusiastically, engaging in the planting of saplings and gaining practical insights into the ecological importance of afforestation. The drive aimed to enhance green cover, promote environmental responsibility, and raise awareness about the role of trees in maintaining ecological balance, reducing pollution, and mitigating climate change. The activity provided a meaningful experiential learning opportunity by translating theoretical environmental concepts into tangible action. Conducted under CARRE Event.


The Department of Environmental Studies successfully organized an educational visit to “Prakriti Samvad – Eco-Centric Dialogue & Discourse” on 27th January 2026 in Mumbai. The event, organized by the Forum for Eco-Centric Development, aimed to promote awareness regarding environmental sustainability, eco-centric development, and responsible living practices. A total of 56 learners from the Degree Science and Commerce streams actively participated in the programme. The visit was conducted under the guidance and supervision of Dr. Priti Gupta and Mr. Pradeep Yadav. The programme featured expert panel discussions, insightful deliberations, interactive sessions, exhibitions, and research presentations delivered by eminent environmentalists, academicians, and policymakers. Students gained valuable exposure to contemporary themes including biodiversity conservation, sustainable development, climate action, and eco-friendly lifestyles. The activity provided learners with a meaningful experiential learning opportunity beyond the classroom, fostering environmental consciousness, critical thinking, leadership qualities, and social responsibility. The event proved to be highly informative and inspiring. Conducted under CARRE Event.

The Department of Environmental Studies of Thakur College of Science and Commerce successfully organized “Paryavaran Mitravat” at the Inter-Collegiate level on 24th January 2026 for Degree College learners. The event was conducted under the Academic Year 2025–26 with the theme “Beat Plastic, Breathe Easy.” The programme aimed to promote environmental awareness, encourage creative expression, and sensitize learners towards sustainable practices and plastic pollution reduction. The competitions were held offline in the Seminar Hall from 9:30 a.m. onwards and received an overwhelming response, with a total of 356 learners participating enthusiastically across various institutions. The event featured multiple engaging competitions including Crossword Competition, Logo Identification Competition, Drawing Competition, and Best Out of Waste Competition. The activity provided learners with a platform to showcase their knowledge, creativity, and environmental consciousness. All participants were awarded e-certificates, while winners received merit certificates and trophies. The event proved to be highly impactful and inspiring, fostering ecological responsibility, innovation, and sustainability-oriented thinking among students. Conducted under CARRE Event.

 The Department of Environmental Studies of Thakur College of Science & Commerce (Empowered Autonomous) successfully organized a Biodiversity Walk on 28th February 2026 as part of experiential learning under the Environmental Studies curriculum. The activity aimed at sensitizing learners towards ecological conservation, biodiversity protection, and sustainable environmental practices. A total of 46 learners from FYBCom (Regular and Professional Courses) enthusiastically participated in the walk. The initiative provided students with first-hand exposure to diverse plant species, ecological interactions, and conservation mechanisms in a natural setting. Through guided observation and interactive discussions, learners gained practical insights into ecosystem balance, native biodiversity, and the importance of preserving natural habitats amidst rapid urbanization. The walk encouraged students to appreciate nature, understand environmental challenges, and adopt environmentally responsible behavior in their daily lives. The activity successfully reinforced theoretical classroom concepts with field-based learning and strengthened students’ commitment towards environmental stewardship and sustainable development.


 Student Achievements

  1. Mr. Adityaraj Singh (FYBAF – B Roll no. 2517224) qualified for the second round of the National Championship of Entrepreneurs under E-Cell Prerna’s promotion, where he is proudly representing the college; as part of the competition tasks.

  2. The student researchers Vishesh Naik and Sumita Singh of M.Com (B&F), under the guidance of Dr. Prajakta Vinod Jadhav (Department of Environmental Studies), participated in the Final Round – Podium Presentation at the 20th Aavishkar University Inter-Collegiate/Institute/Department Research Convention organized by the Department of Students’ Development, University of Mumbai, held on 18th December 2024.




 Achievements for Orientation and Refresher Programme/ Faculty Development Programme (FDP)/ Short-Term Course

  1. Dr. Prajakta Vinod Jadhav successfully completed a One-Week Online Faculty Development Programme on “Mentorship for Industry Internship & Entrepreneurship in Green Energy Audit” under the Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Programme (MMTTP) of UGC, organized by UGC-MMTTC, Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Khalsa College, University of Delhi, from 3rd September to 12th September 2025, and was awarded Grade “A”.


  1. Dr. Prajakta Vinod Jadhav successfully completed a One-Week Residential Faculty Development Programme titled “Demystifying Cutting Edge Technologies” organized by the Maharashtra State Faculty Development Academy (MSFDA), Pune from 13th to 17th October 2025. The FDP focused on AI tools, e-content development, MOOCs, sustainable and cutting-edge technologies, IPR, and industry–academia partnership for entrepreneurship development.


  1. Dr. Prajakta Vinod Jadhav successfully completed the National Level Online “NEP-2020 Orientation & Sensitization Programme” organized through the UGC-Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Centre (UGC-MMTTC), Department of Educational Technology, SNDT Women’s University, Mumbai, held from 15th to 23rd January 2026 with ‘O’ grade. The programme focused on enhancing faculty understanding of the National Education Policy 2020, emphasizing multidisciplinary education, learner-centric pedagogies, academic flexibility, and the integration of technology-enabled teaching and learning practices.
