Department of Mathematics and Statistics - Activities & Events in 2021-22



1) National Statistics Day Celebration: - 

Department of Statistics and Department of Mathematics celebrated National Statistics Day by organising an “Online Quiz on Data Interpretation’’ on 29th June 2021 and workshop on the software “MS-EXCEL” on 30th June 2021 to commemorate the Birth Anniversary of Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis. 

     132 learners from Science and Commerce participated in the online quiz competition on Statistical Data Interpretation. The “MS-EXCEL’’ workshop was a deliberative two-hour training conducted by Mr. Sanjit Jha, a Freelance Corporate Full-stack Trainer, on 30th June at 12:00 noon for the UG learners. 82 learners from all the streams of UG level participated in the workshop. The main objective of the workshop was to familiarize our students with the various uses and functionalities of the software MS-EXCEL. The workshop was conducted online using the ZOOM platform.

     Mr. Jha explained the uses of simple functions like sum, average, product, division, max, min, text function and various ways of formatting the entered data, explaining lucidly with the help of dataset. He also discussed the use of standard operators like AVERAGEIF, COUNTIF and various mathematical and statistical functions.  Various editing techniques that are available in EXCEL were also taught by him.   This workshop served its prime objective to expose the various tools of MS-EXCEL to the UG level students that are necessary for data handling, data entry and data analysis.

2) Guest Lecture on Growing Trends of Population in India :-

To celebrate the World Population Day on 12th July 2021, Deparment of Statistics organized an online guest lecture on the topic  ‘The  Growing Trend of Population in India’. The guest speaker was Dr Paramita Das , Associate Professor from Cachar College , Silchar , Assam. 62 learners from science and commerce attended the webinar.

   Dr. Mrs. Paramita Das. explained the population issues and impact of it on development, environment and other issues. She also discussed trend of population growth in India since 1952 and explained how the graph of population growth depends on Birth and Death rate.   This webinar served its prime objective to raise awareness on issues that may arise with continuous increase in population on the earth.

3) Case Study / Report writing Competition on Environmental Issue  :-

A Natural Disaster is an unforeseen occurrence of an event that causes harm to society. There are many natural disasters that damage the environment and the people living in it. In the recent past, we have seen unprecedented natural events which has caused enormous unrepairable loss to mankind. To understand the importance of environment issues, a Case study and Report Writing  Competition was organized. 20 students  participated in this competition.

The learners had the option to present their case study and/or report writing  on any one of the following topics:

  • Mission Impossible: Rogue Nature

  • Water, water everywhere but not a drop to drink: Water management

  • Environmental disaster on Indian soil since 2015

  • Hazard Management

4) Guest Lecture on Gender Equality:

An Online Guest Lecture on Gender Equality on the topic “A Man–made Socio–Cultural Definition” was organised on 14th August 2021 on Zoom platform. 79 learners attended the guest lecture.

     The speaker was Dr. Aditi Govil, Assistant Professor, Swami Shraddhanand College, Delhi University. The main objective of conducting the guest lecture was to have awareness about the differences in roles and relationship between men and women. 

   Dr. Aditi Govil. explained that Gender Equality is a human fight and not only the fight of the women. She also gave stress on “Men, their rights, and nothing more, women, their rights, nothing less.’’ She also explained in a lucid language that gender equality means people of all genders have equal rights, responsibilities and opportunities.

This guest lecture served its prime objective to raise awareness on gender equality which is a process to facilitate the exchange of ideas, improve mutual understanding and develop competencies and skills necessary for societal change.  

   The guest lecture ended with immense positive feedback given by the students.

5) World Hepatitis Day celebration on 28th August 2021

On The occasion of World Hepatitis Day 2021, Department of Mathematics and NSS unit of TCSC in collaboration with United Way Mumbai organized an online webinar on “Awareness of Hepatitis: Cause & Preventions” on July 28, 2021, on zoom platform and You tube live.  The aim was to spread awareness and knowledge on the topic among the learners. The prominent Speaker of the webinar was Mr. Rakesh Game (United Way Mumbai). Total 601 learners participated the webinar.

6) Intra collegiate Aptitude Test on 6th September 2021: -

National Integration bestows peace and harmony upon the nation.  It is the bond and togetherness between people regardless of their caste, creed, religion or gender. India is the finest example of a country displaying the spirit of National Integration. 

Keeping in mind the importance of the same, to enhance the learners’ knowledge on  National Integration an Aptitude test was conducted on September 6, 2021 through Google form mode. 96 students participated the Aptitude test.

7) E-Conference on Trends and Perspectives in Statistics and Mathematics on 25th September: -

Department of Statistics, St. Xavier's College (Autonomous), Mumbai Under the aegis of DBT Star (Status) Scheme in collaboration with Department of Statistics and Department of Mathematics, Thakur College of Science & Commerce (Autonomous), Mumbai organized a One Day National Conference on the topic ‘Trends and Perspectives in Statistics and Mathematics: A Multi-Disciplinary Approach’. The conference was conducted online through ZOOM platform on September 25, 2021, from 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM India. 68 papers were received on subthemes from different states of India, out of which 18 papers were selected for presentation and publication by the review members of the conference.  Papers were published in “Journal of Scientific Research”, of the Banaras Hindu University, ISSN Number 0447-9483 in Volume 65, January 20222.

8) Value Education session by Ms. Pragya Mishra: - 

Value Education is the process through which an individual develops abilities, attitude, and values as well. To inculcate these values among the learners, a guest lecture on  ‘Bolti Kahani - Premchand ki Jubani’ was conducted on 23rd October 2021 through Zoom platform. The Guest Speaker for this event was Ms. Pragya Mishra, M.A. (Hindi), M.C.A., Tata Consultancy Services. 64 participants attended this webinar.

9) Skill Course on R Software: - 

Department of Mathematics & Department of Statistics initiated an Online Skill Course on Basics of R Software. Students from both streams (Science and Commerce) of First Year were eligible to take up the course.

10) Ramanujan Week celebration (20th December – 24th December)

To commemorate the birthday of the Greatest Mathematician of India, Sri Srinivasa Ramanujan, 22nd December is being celebrated as National Mathematics Day every year. To celebrate National Mathematics Day, Ramanujan week was celebrated from 20th December 2021 to 24th December 2021. Various events & workshop were conducted during the week.

(a) To enhance the overall academics and capability to face the various competitive exams in their future an Aptitude Test was taken. The test was conducted through online mode on 20th December 2021. 87 learners from Commerce, Science and Specialized Courses appeared for the Aptitude test. Multiple choice questions were asked from various fields like Mathematics, General knowledge, General Science, Current affairs etc.  Given below is the winners list of the aptitude test:


(b) A Poster Making Competition on the topic “Application of Mathematics & Statistics ” was conducted on 21ST December,2021.A Google submission link was shared with the students and there were 12 participants in this competition. All these 12 participants submitted digital copy of their poster. 


(c) Sudoku & Crossword Competition was conducted on 24th December ,2021 through Zoom Platform. 126 learners participated in this competition and the winners list is as follows:

 

11) WORKSHOP ON EXCEL 15th January 2022

A workshop on MS - Excel was conducted on 15th January 2022 from 11:00 am -1:00 pm. The resource person was Mr. Sanjit Jha , a Software Full stack trainer. EXCEL is a spreadsheet program created by Microsoft that uses tables to record & analyse numerical & statistical data which is widely used in the present times. In a two-hour duration he explained with examples the various operations that could be done using MS-EXCEL.  62 students participated with great interest.


12) Guest lecture on Break the Bias: -

 Gender equality is a human fight, not a female fight. Men, their rights, and nothing more, women, their rights, and nothing less. In context with this, in association with Women Development Cell, an online guest lecture on the topic “Break the Bias” was organized on 12th February 2022. The Guest Speaker for this event was Mrs. Meenakshi Pange (Winner of Mrs. India Brainy Beauty Rising Star 2021), Vice President in Multinational Bank. There were 104 participants in this webinar and the session was really an interactive one.

Visit to Nehru Planetarium

Department of Mathematics and Department of Statistics in collaboration with science association arranged a field trip to Nehru Planetarium (Worli)  and Birla science centre on 11th march for T.Y.B.Sc (Statistics) and T.Y.B.Sc. (Mathematics) . 28 students visited planetarium. The students visited the galleries where they were able to see the various exhibits based on stone ages, Harappa civilization, discovery of fire and exhibits based on Indian History, invasion of Mughals, invasion of East India company and various Indian Dynasties.

13) Data Analysis Competition on 10th March 2022: -

Poverty is much more than having no food, no clothes, no shelter. Ultimate poverty line leads to no education which directly hampers the growth of the society. To spread the awareness of poverty among our learners, a Data Analysis Competition was conducted on 10th March 2022. Learners had to do a case study and write a report on any one of the following topics:-

  • Adverse effect on environment due to Malnutrition. 

  • Environment is affected by poverty through deforestation

  • Poverty leads to Environmental injustice 

69 teams participated in this competition.

14) Career Guidance Lecture


 On 12th March 2022, a lecture on “Career Guidance for Future Prospects in Mathematics and Statistics” was organised. Mathematics Alumni Mr. Dhruv Bhavsar (Associate Process Manger, Eclerx Services Ltd) was the speaker of the day. Mr. Dhruv Bhavsar explained importance and job opportunities of Mathematics and Statistics in different fields. Learners were motivated for using of computer programme coding. 75 learners participated the event.


15) Aptitude Test Week from 14th March to 20th March: - 

 To enhance the overall academics and capability to face the various competitive exams in their future an Aptitude Test Week was conducted from 14th March to 21st March 2022. During this week every day an aptitude test was conducted on various topics in online mode. Day wise topics are given as follows:

Day 1(14-03-2022): History and Geography

Day 2 (15-03-2022): Mathematics and Statistics 

Day 3(16-03-2022): General Knowledge

Day 4 (17-03-2022): General Science 

Day 5 (19-03-2022): Logical Reasoning 

Day 6 (20-03-2022): Current Affairs 

Day 7 (21-03-2022): General English
