Department of Botany - Activities & Events in 2020-21


      In the Academic year 2020-21, Department of Botany had organized various Curricular and Co-Curricular Activities to enhance the knowledge of learners in field of Plant Sciences. The details of the activities conducted are as follows:

   

  • Workshop:

  • Department of botany organized a workshop on “Refer the Reference Book” on 27th October 2020 from 4.00 to 5.30 p.m. for the students of S. Y. B. Sc. (CB) by using online platform of Google Meet to make them understand importance of the reference books in higher studies and practical knowledge to refer the reference books. 30 students participated in the workshop.Dr. Vinit Vaidya was the Resource person for the workshop. 


  • Department of Botany organized a workshop on “Draw the Diagrams” on Wednesday, 17th February 2021 from 5.00 to 7.00 p.m. by using online platform of Google Meet; where Dr. Vinit Vaidya was the Resource person to guide the students

  • Guest Lecture:

  • On 11th January, 2021 Department of Botany in collaboration with Science Association , organized an Online Gust lecture on "Cancer: Causes and Prevention" on zoom platform. Resource person Dr. Puneet Pareekh, Additional Professor-Radiation Oncology-AIIMS, Jodhpur, Rajasthan, addressed the teachers and students from FY.B.Sc, SY. BSc. TYBSc & M.Sc. class from Science streams. More than  350 participants attended the session.

   

        Gust lecture on "Cancer: Causes and Prevention"

        

  • A career guidance lecture for T.Y.B.Sc. (Botany, Zoology & Biotechnology) and M.Sc. (Botany and Zoology) learners was organized on 11th January, 2021 by Department of Botany & Science Association, on zoom platform regarding CSIR NET-JRF Examination. Resource person Dr. Rajveer Singh Chauhan, Assistant Professor, Department of Botany, DDU Gorakhpur University, Gorakhpur, U.P. guided the students about the eligibility and course material and career options in the field of Biological sciences. 50 students from T.Y. B.Sc. (Botany, Zoology & Biotechnology) and M.Sc. (Botany and Zoology) attended the career guidance lecture.

  • A guidance session on “Career Choices and Job Opportunities” was jointly organized by the Department of Chemistry, Botany and Zoology on Tuesday, 30th March 2021; where Dr. S. D. Ajagkear, Vice Principal, Faculty of Science; Dr. C. P. Shukla, Head, Department of Botany and Dr. Vitthal Mohite, Department of Zoology guided 105 students from F. Y. B. Sc. (CBZ) regarding various career options, competitive examinations and job opportunities in the subject of Chemistry, Botany and Zoology respectively. The programme was coordinated by Dr. Vinit Vaidya.

  • A guest lecture on “Wetland Ecology” was organized  by the Department of Botany for the  learners on 31st March 2021. Dr. Goldin Quadros, Senior Scientist, Wetland Ecology Division, Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology & Natural History, Coimbatore, Tamilnadu, addressed the students about the significance of wetland for humanity and balanced ecosystem.

  • On 1st April, 2021 an online guest lecture was organized by the department of Physics and Botany on “Importance of Proteins in Daily Diet”. Resource person Ms. Vibha Hasija, Department of Food, Nutrition & Dietics, Nirmala Niketan, Mumbai, spoke about the role of proteins in our daily diet. Total 100 participants attended the session.

  • Guest lecture on Value Education “AIDS Awareness” was organized on 14th April, 2021. Resource Person. Dr. Hemlata Arora, Senior consultant,  Nanavati Super Speciality Hospital Mumbai, explained the structure of the HIV, mode of transmission & multiplication and control measures of the retrovirus. About 100 participants from learners from F.Y.B.Sc (CBZ), S.Y. B.Sc. (CB), T.Y. B. Sc (Botany), M.Sc. Botany and students from chemistry and zoology attended the session.

  • National conference

  • Department of Botany, EVS and IQAC of TCSC in collaboration with University of Mumbai, Organized One Day National conference on “Sustainable Development: A Green Approach” on 6th March, 2021.The conference was mainly supported by NABARD. The other cosponsors were Speed International India Pvt. Ltd. Chemical Manufacturing and My Green Society.

Dr. (Mrs.) Anuradha Majumdar; Dean, Faculty of Science & Technology, University of Mumbai was the Chief Guest while Ms. Tiakala AO, General Manager, Department of Economic Analysis & Research, NABARD Head Office, Mumbai was the Guest of Honour for the Inaugural Function. Prof. (Dr.) Praveen G. Saptarshi, Eminent Professor, Sustainability Management, Indian Institute of Coast and Management Studies & Research, Pune delivered the keynote address while Mr. Dev Balaji, Advisor & Trainer, Karnataka State Ecotourism Board and Prof. (Dr.) Moushumi Datta, Professor (Geography) & Vice Principal, N.L. College, Malad, Mumbai delivered invited talks. It was telecasted live on YouTube Channel. The total number of viewers was about 3350.

Total 115 Abstracts and 108 Full Length Papers were received for the favor of publication. About 363 participants across the Nation along with delegates from Kuwait, France & Ireland participated in the conference. There was presentation of about 58 research papers in 4 different tracks through online mode of presentation on Google Meet.

















  • Origin: Intra-Collegiate Science Exhibition:

 Five Exhibits/ working models were presented by the students from FY BSc (CBZ), S. Y. B. Sc. (CB) and TYBSc (Bot) in “ORIGIN 2021” organized by Department of Information Technology in Collaboration with Science Association on 20th March 2021. Students group prepared various projects and working models, under guidance of Dr. C. P. Shukla and Dr. Vinit Vaidya . 


  • Certificate Courses in Botany: 

Department of Botany conduct two unpaid certificate courses, to enhance the skill of the students in the subject.

  1. “Taxonomy of Angiosperms” where students learn the principles of identification, nomenclature and classification of the plants. Duration of the course is 30 hours. 

  2. “Sales Mark” in Collaboration with Department of commerce, where Sales Mark: Commerce students learn Practical knowledge of preservation Techniques of Jam, Jellies, Pickles etc. & Botany Students learn Marketing skills.  Duration of the course is 30 hours.

  • Presented a Research Paper on " A Review on Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons: Sources, Routes of Exposure and Methods of Bio-remediation". in One Day National conference on “Sustainable Development :A Green Approach” organized by Department of Botany, EVS and IQAC of TCSC in collaboration with University of Mumbai, on 6th March, 2021.

  • Presented a Research Paper on " Fresh water Microalgal Diversity of Mumbai & Thane District of Maharashtra” in One Day National conference on “Sustainable Development: A Green Approach” organized by Department of Botany, EVS and IQAC of TCSC in collaboration with University of Mumbai, on 6th March, 2021.

  • Dr. Vinit Vaidya Submitted a research paper on “Fungal Organisms as the Potential Catalyst for Bioremediation of Heavy Metals” along with Ms. Shruti Papaiya and Mr. Deepak Gupta in One Day National Conference organized by the Department of Botany, EVS and IQAC of TCSC in Collaboration with the University of Mumbai on “Sustainable Development: A Green Approach” on Saturday, 6th March 2021. 

  • Dr. Ruchi Singh presented a paper on “Effect of Carbendazim and Pendimithalin and their combination in the nitrogen fixing efficiency of Rhizobium and rhizosphere mycoflora of Pea (Pisum sativum L.)” in One Day National conference on “Sustainable Development: A Green Approach” organized by Department of Botany, EVS and IQAC of TCSC in collaboration with University of Mumbai, on 6th March, 2021.



  • Teachers Achievements:

Dr. Vinit Vaidya:

  1. Conducted 15 Sessions on “Resume Writing, Etiquette, Communication and Personality Grooming” for about 1000 registered students TCSC for Training & Placement Cell by using online platform of Telegram from 1st to 15th June 2021. 

  2. Worked as resource for the invited Talk on “Career Opportunities in Plant Sciences” on Saturday, 20th February 2021 organized by the Department of Botany, G. N. Khalsa College, Mumbai for undergraduate students. 

  3. Worked as resource for a workshop on “Mushrooms – Values & Benefits” organized by the IQAC and Nature Club of Elphinstone College, Dr. Homi Bhabha State University, Mumbai on Friday, 19th March 2021 from 12.00 noon to 1.30 p.m. It was attended by 55 students from faculty of Arts, Science & Commerce. 

  4. Worked as resource person for the Seminar on “Application of Mathematics and Statistics in Higher Education and Competitive Examinations” organized by the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Commerce, Junior College, TCSC on Saturday, 20th March 2021 from 12.00 noon to 1.30 p.m. 

  5. conducted a session on “How to crack UPSC and MPSC Examinations?” organized by the Department of Physics, Rizvi College, University of Mumbai on Saturday, 3rd April 2021 from 11.30 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. 


  1. conducted a workshop on “Present Yourself Professionally: A Guidance Lecture” for S. Y. B. Sc. and T. Y. B. Sc. students organized by the Department of Physics, TCSC on Wednesday, 14 April 2021 from 11.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. to speak about “How to write Resume and Covering Letter?’.
