Department of Botany - Activities & Events in 2022-23

Department of Botany, organized various Curricular and Co-Curricular Activities during the Academic year 2022-23. The details of the activities are as follows:

• Workshop:

• Workshop on “making Power point presentation” was organized by the department of Botany on July, 20th, 2022. 35 students participated in the workshop. Dr. Vinit Vaidya was the Resource person for the workshop. Students were explained different features of power point presentation, method of slides preparation and animation followed by the hands on training.

• On 11th February, 2023, Department of Botany, organized a workshop and hands on Training on “Palynology  and its Applications”. Prof. Bhagwan Jaiswal from Sonopant Dandekar College, Palghar, Maharashtra, was the resource person. He explained basics of palynology, Microsporogenesis, pollen arrangement and pollen wall development as well as how pollen grains are useful in medicine, forensic science and honey industry. 37 students participated in hands on training and made slides of pollens from various plants and understood the difference at morphological level.

• On 2nd March, 2023, a workshop on “Draw the Diagrams” was organized by the Department of Botany. Dr. Vinit Vaidya was the Resource person, and he explained the importance of diagrams, how to draw scientific diagram, and how to explain the concepts based on the same. 32 students from F.Y. B.Sc. (CBZ) /S.Y. B.Sc. (CB) and T.Y. B.Sc. (Botany) attended the workshop.

• One day Workshop on “Introduction to Bioinformatics” was organized by Department of Botany on 14th February, 2023. Ms. Priya Pandey, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Botany, TCSC was the resource person. 19 students from F.Y. B.Sc. (CBZ) and S.Y. B.Sc. (CB) attended the session.

• Department of botany organized a workshop on “Refer the Reference Book” on 5th April, 2023 from 10.00 am to 12.30 p.m. for the students of F. Y. B. Sc. (CBZ), to make them understand importance of the reference books in higher studies and practical knowledge to refer the reference books. 25 students attended the workshop. Dr. Vinit Vaidya was the Resource person for the workshop. 

       Guest Lecture:

• On 1st March, 2023 Department of Botany organized a Guest lecture on "HPTLC". Resource person Dr. Sunita Shailajan, Principal Investigator, DST-SERB, Technical Expert, QCI-Government of India, addressed the students from F.Y. B. Sc, S.Y. B.Sc., T. Y. B. Sc. & M.Sc. class from Science streams. More than 140 participants attended the session.

• A Career Guidance Session was jointly  organized for F. Y. B. Sc. (CBZ & PCM) students on Saturday, 1st April 2023 in the Seminar Hall from 1.00 to 3.30 p.m. Dr. S. D. Ajagekar (Vice Principal, Science & Senior Faculty, Department of Chemistry), Mr. Kuldeep Kandwal (Head, Department of Mathematics), Mrs. Anuradha Hait (Head, Department of Statistics), Dr. Shirley Agwoucha (Senior Faculty, Department of Zoology), Dr. Gitesh Padhye (Head, Department of Physics) and Dr. Vinit Vaidya (Department of Botany & Career Counsellor) guided the students about various career options and job opportunities in the respective fields. Total 97 students from F. Y. B. Sc. (CBZ) and 21 students from F. Y. B. Sc. (PCM) attended the session.

Excursion/Field visit:

• A visit to Blatter Herbarium was organized for M.Sc. Botany Part-I students on, 18th October, 2022. 11 students from M.Sc. Part-I attended the same. They learnt the preservation techniques and preparation of herbaria, collection and nomenclature of taxa.

• Department of Botany in collaboration with Department of Physics, organized one day visit to Study Ethno-botanical plants in natural their habitats at Saphale, Palghar, as Inter-departmental study, for T.Y. B.Sc. (Botany),  S.Y. B.Sc. (CB) and M.Sc. Botany Part-I students, on 15th January, 2023. Students visited the forest, studied medicinal plants, endemic plants, endangered plants and economically and ecologically plants.30 students participated in the visit along with Teachers from the Botany and physics Department.

• One day visit to Keshavshrushti, Bhayander (West) was organized for F.Y. B.Sc. (CBZ), S.Y. B. Sc (CB) and M.Sc. Botany Part-II students, on 22nd January, 2023. Students visited Vermicomposting, Biogas plant, medicinal plant and students were given hands on training on paper making by the experts from Keshavshrushti. 121 students participated in the visit and prepared a report on the same.

• Origin-2023: Intra-Collegiate Science Exhibition:

Origin- 2023, an Intra-Collegiate Science Exhibition, was organized by Department of Botany, in Collaboration with Science Association (Degree College) on the theme International Year of Millets, on the eve of National Science Day, 28th Feb 2023. About 267 enthusiastic research teams comprising undergraduate  and Post graduate learners of Degree College (Science Stream) from different departments participated and presented theoretical and experimental aspects of their exhibits / working models and  the best 3 exhibits  freom each department were given first second and 3rd prizes and overall 3 exhibits/models were selected from all the department and awarded first second and third prizes. Dr. Balkrishna Gore, Head, Department of Zoology, Bhavans College, Andheri (West) Mumbai, was on panel of judges for Botany & Zoology. Dr. Abdul Kayum Karam Hussain Chaudhary, Assistant Professor, Department of Physics, Royal College of Arts, Science & Commerce, Mira Road (East) Thane, was invited to judge the Physics, Maths and Statistics exhibits. Dr. Abhijit Kadam, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, Bhavan’s College Chowpati, Mumbai, was invited for Chemistry and Biotechnology exhibits and Mrs. Vaishali Mishra, Co-ordinator Department of IT, Nirmala College, Kandivali  was invited for Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Science and Animation Exhibits. All the judges appreciated the efforts of the participants and encouraged them Origin-2023 provided an excellent interface to the participating teams to unleash their creativity.

Orientation & Refresher Course:

•   Dr. Chandra Prakash Shukla, Completed FDP (Online) on “Education in 21st Century: Implementing NEP2020 from Quality Education in HEIs” Jointly Organized by Thakur College of Science & Commerce, Mumbai and Guru Angad Dev Teaching Learning Centre, SGTB Khalsa College, University of Delhi under the Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya National Mission on Teachers and Teaching  of Ministry of Education from 9th Aug, 2022 to 16th Aug, 2022.

• Dr. Chandra Prakash Shukla, successfully completed Faculty Development Programme on  “Student Centricity in Education” from 16th Dec. to 18th December, 2022, conducted by Maharashtra State Faculty Development Academy, Pune at FLAME UNIVERSITY, Pune.

Baroda University, Gujrat.
