Department of Zoology - Activities & Events in 2019-20


  1. Healthy Fish Recipes :  13th July 2019

Number of participants: 23

Department has conducted intra-collegiate Healthy Fish Recipes on 13th July 2019. 23 Students participated from the degree science, commerce and self-finance courses in 11 groups. Dr. Pravin Pawar, Assistant professor and Mr. GhanshyamHande, Junior Biology were the judges for the competition. Jhanvi Thakur and  Joy Das T.Y.B.Sc Botany was the first winner. VaishnaviDrage and SagarPasi of T.Y.B.Sc. Botany are the second winner. Nikhatshaikh T.Y.B.Sc.Zooloy is the third winners. Health perspectives, Innovativeness, Hygiene and Presentation were the criteria’s for the competition.

  1. DNA Fingerprinting : 

Department of Zoology has organized Two Days Workshop on DNA Fingerprinting in collaboration with Make Intern for Wetlab Championship @Shaastra Event IIT-Madras on 22nd and 23rd Aug 2019. Fifty students and 2 faculties from different colleges had participated in the workshop. In this two days interactive session, multiple topics under the heading of DNA Fingerprinting theme have been covered. Students have enjoyed hands on training.

  1. Carrier Guidance Future Scope in Zoology by Ms. Shweta Chelluboina, Alumni of the Department.  21 students from the  S.Y. and T.Y. B.Sc. Zoology has been attended.

  2. Department has organized One Day workshop on Freshwater Pearl Culture on 8th Feb.2020.

Resource person Mr. Ashok Manawani, President, Indian Pearl Culture.

47 students from F.Y./S.Y./ and T.Y.B.Sc. has  participated and taken hands on on training. 

  1. Department of Zoology in collaboration with Makeintern and E Cell IIT, Mumbai. Organized Two days Workshop on CRISPR GENE EDITING

Date : 28th and 29th Feb. 2020

Resource Person: Dr. Chinmoy Patra, Agarkar Research Institute, Pune.

In all 37 students were participated in the workshop from the different organization like M.Sc. Students from the Department of Life Science, University of Mumbai, S.Y./T.Y. Students from the Lords Universal College, Goregaon, and F.Y./S.Y. / T.Y. Students from the chemistry, Botany and Zoology of our college has participated in the workshop. 

  1. Department organized Guest Lecture on “Biological Patent Law” 

Dr. Vaishali Kadam, Freelancer Corporate Trainee on 7th March 2020.

114students from F.Y./S.Y. and T.Y.B.Sc. has attended the session.



Teachers Achievements


Dr. Vitthal T. Mohite Received Prestigious National Archana Award for the year 2019 for his contribution in the field of Environmental Biology. This award has been given by Academy of Environmental Biology, Lucknow in its 39th Session in National Conference on “One Health and Ecosystem Services” organized by ICAR- National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources, Lucknow in collaboration with Academy of Environmental Biology, Lucknow and Aquatic Biodiversity Society, (ABCS), India on 29th November, 2019 at ICAR-NBFGR, Lucknow.

Summary:

Snowy Bapista began the discussion by introducing the project of MFSGNP to the students and that SGNPs  presence in the mega polis along with the leopards is one of the its kind and discussed some basic precautionary measures. NikitSurve explained the basic features of leopards emphasizing on what prey they would feed on and how this makes them the most adaptable of all carnivorous and yet the most shy.

Dr. Pethe further discussed how leopards avoid humans, however accidental conflicts are assumed as a permanent threat to humans, which highlights the leopard in a wrong manner. He emphasized on how leopards learn hunting skills from their mothers and the human being is not a part of a leopard’s food plate (preferred prey). He also discussed the significance of wild animals and the SGNP Forest in Mumbai.
