Department of Zoology - Activities & Events in 2021-22



In the academic year, 2021-2022; Department of Zoology has hosted a myriad of guest lectures, webinars, field visits etc., for the learners of our college and various other colleges. The activities were conducted singly or in collaboration with other departments. All the topics were well thought of, and picked giving keen attention to the requirements of the learners.

The eventsconducted were as follows:

  • ONLINE GUEST LECTURES AND WEBINARS

  1. On the 7th of September 2021, the Zoology Department in collaboration with Wildlife Institute of India, Dehardun, organised an online guest lecture on Conservation of Dugongs and their Habitat in India by Ms. Prachi Hatkar, Research Scholar, Wild Life Institute of India, Dehradun, also our alumnus. Total 120 students attended the event. Dugongs are sea cows, highly threatened species. Researcher team of WII, Deharadhun is putting lots of efforts for their conservation.

2. In collaboration with Learn to upgrade; the department organised two OnlineWebinars;

(a) “Bioinformatics” by Dr. Jitesh Doshi, Director and Bioinformaticsspecialist, Bioinsight Solution, Mumbai on 02.10.2021. A total of 450 participants from TCSC and all over India participated in the event. In Biological Sciences Bioinformatics is playing important to study Biodiversity  

 (b) “Career in Food Processing Technology” by Dr. Anshu Singh,  IIT Kharagpur, Alumni on 16.10.202.450 and 163 learners respectively from Thakur college and from all over India attended the sessions

  1. Oceans are very vast with tremendous resources but less explored. Due to advancement in technology we are able to understand benefits of oceans. The Department organised an online Guest Lecture on “Marine Bioprospecting” on 4th October 2021 by Dr. Narsingh Thakur, Principal Senior Scientist & Head, Chemical Oceanography, CSIR – National Institute of Oceanography, Dona Paula, Goa. Total 87 Students from different subjects have attended the session.

  2. To prepare the students to face the competitive world Department of Zoology organized one-day National level Webinar on "Strategies to Crackdown Competitive Exams in Life Sciences"in collaboration with IQAC, TCSC and Institute for Advanced Studies, Pune/Jodhpur (IFAS) on 18 December 2021. The Resource person was Mr. Lalji Ramtirath Kannoujiya Faculty member, IFAS, Jodhpur . 74 participants from different parts of India had participated in the webinar.

  1. An online One-day National Webinar on Freshwater Pearl Culture was held on 22nd January 2022. Speaker Mr. Ashok Manawani, Director, Indian Pearl Culture and Kulanjan Dubey Manawani explained about the techniques used in the freshwater pearl culture. Total 550 participants from all over the country were part of the event. Pearl industry in India is flourishing very fast and we mostly depend on Chinese cultured pearls. India has very good potential to develop freshwater pearl culture.

  1. The Department organized an online lecture on “Enhance learning Experience through QR Code” by Dr. Nandita Singh, Associate Professor, Department of Zoology, G.M. Momin Women’s College, Bhiwandi, on Saturday, 12th Feb. 2022. Total 59 students were in attendance for the lecture.

  1. On the Occasion of World wildlife Day, 3rd March 2022, Zoology department organized an online Guest Lecture on Importance of wildlife in our Ecosystem &the Do’s and Donts of Wildlife rescue” by Dr. Dinesh Vinherkar, Veterinary physician and surgeon Mumbai. Total 79 students and faculties from other departments had participated in the talk. He has explained in our how we can save the life wild animals. 

 

DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY - Adobe Acrobat Reader DC (32-bit)

  • FIELD VISITS AND ACTIVITIES

  1. The M.Sc. students of the department worked on QR coding of the Specimens present in the Zoology laboratory. 91 species in the laboratory including coelenterata, Porifera. Echinodermata, mollusks, birds, reptiles and fishes were coded in the month of November 2021. In the form of QR code the information is stored permanently and can be made is available for future generations.

  2.  “WILDLIFE CAPTURES”, A Wildlife Photography competition was conducted in online mode on 24th January 2022. Judges for the event were, Dr. Omkar V. Yadav, Head, Dept. of Zoology, ASSM, Medha, Satara.  There was an overwhelming response from a total of 54participants of TCSC and all over the state. This competition is been oganised to increase interest of the students in wildlife conservation.

Department of Zoology arranged visit to Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) on 29th March 2022 for the students of M. Sc. I, total 11 students were present during visit. Dr. Rahul Khot, Asst. director and Museum curator of BNHS were gave the information about the dry preservation of Insect, Birds and mammals. They also showed some of the Holotype of the fishes to the students.

(b) 22 students of T.Y. B.Sc. Zoology visited Sanjay Gandhi National Park on 18thFeb 2022. During visit, faculties have given information to the students about Identification of Birds, Mammals and Reptiles. They also learnt about the role of animals in the environment.

  • STUDENT WELFARE

  1. Department has organised Alumni meet on 26th Feb.2022 at 7.00 pm &35 alumni have attended the meeting.
