Report- BNHS Visit TY B. Sc. Zoology 2023-24

To create awareness among the students and make them knowledgeable regarding the museum specimen, taxonomy and as a part of curriculum, department of Zoology organized field visit to Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) at 14/Dec./2023. Total 16 TY B. Sc. students were actively participated in the same event. The BNHS Department plays a vital role in raising awareness about conservation issues and promoting sustainable practices

At first, Dr. Rahul Khot, Deputy Director of BNHS delivered lecture on Importance of Biodiversity. He talked about the role of plants and animals in the ecosystem. He told about the methods of animal preservation techniques. He showed us dry preserved butterflies. He nicely explained every aspect regarding the entomology. The second lecture was taken by Mr. Hegade sir, He was nicely explained about the birds. He showed dryly preserved (taxidermy) birds. The collection which he was showing us was 150 years old. Mr. Hegade sir also give us an idea about taxidermy. Taxidermy is the art of preparing, stuffing, and mounting the skins of animals for display or for other sources of study. It can be done on all vertebrate species of animals, including mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians. BNHS have very rear collection of birds in their museum. The last lecture was given by Mr. Patil sir. He talks about the mammals. The BNHS has played a crucial role in protecting India's wildlife. The Society pioneered wildlife research in the subcontinent, which helped to save many species and habitats.

The planning and coordination of the same field visit was done by Dr. Rupesh Yadav

Lab to land Programme Report

On the appointed day of 20th march, 2024 we all (Mr. Pawar Navnath along with 19students) assembled at thakur college of science and commerce college at 5:30 a.m. and we allreached to Mahabaleshwar at 3:30 p.m.For the sake of conservation of an ecosystem knowledge and understanding of the bioticand abiotic factors are essential. As students of Zoology, we need to understand thegeographical distribution of different animals, their relation with the respective habitats andpossible threats to the ecosystem, and for that we need to study the biodiversity of a certainarea of interest. To study the biodiversity in its all aspects, we need to visit areas which are full of diverse flora and fauna, for knowing and gathering information about surrounding animals and plants. People have to travel long distance in the midst of the nature and this is how the notion of the excursion i.e. field study has been emphasized, It is a good way to enrich our knowledge about the distribution of different species throughout the globe and to break free from shackle of theoretical learning. Not only that we can learn the facts about animals, but also, we can gather a lot of information regarding the biodiversity as well as biogeography of the particular space. On 21st March, with the students of Thakur College of Science and Commerce, a visit was conducted to the Government Institute of Sericulture located in Wai. The purpose of the visit was to gain insights into the institute's activities, facilities, and contributions to the sericulture sector. The institute was dedicated to various aspects of sericulture, including mulberry cultivation, silkworm rearing, silk processing, and disease management. During the visit, a training session was given to the students informing them about the different species of silks and silkworms. students were engaged in hands-on interested on listening to the activities related to silkworm rearing and mulberry cultivation. The interactive nature of the speaker was commendable, with providing practical guidance and addressing students’ queries. The institute maintains silk production units where visitors can witness the entire silk production process, from mulberry cultivation to silk reeling. Skilled workers demonstrated silk reeling and weaving techniques, highlighting the

craftsmanship involved in silk production. A notable aspect of the institute's approach is the seamless integration of theoretical knowledge with practical skills. The institute's efforts to engage with local communities and stakeholders underscore its role as a catalyst for rural development. By empowering sericulturists with skills and knowledge, the institute contributes to poverty alleviation and socio-economic empowerment at the grassroots level. The visit to the Sericulture Institute provided valuable insights into its role as a centre of excellence in sericulture research, training, and outreach. On 21 st March, 2024, with the students of Thakur College of Science and Commerce, a visit was conducted to the Government Fisheries Department at Dhom (Satara) which aimed to assess the overall management practices, current projects, challenges, and potential areas of improvement within the department. The department possesses adequate infrastructure including office spaces, hatching tanks, and storage facilities and ponds required to breed different commercial fishes. As the students stepped into the department's premises, they were greeted by a flurry of activity, indicative of the important work being carried out within its walls. Upon entering the department, the students were struck by the array of resources at its disposal. From state-of-the-art breeding and hatching tanks equipped with advanced research equipment to bustling offices where experts huddled over data analysis, it was evident that this was a place where science and innovation intersected to tackle pressing environmental issues. The first stop was the breeding tanks were different species of Indian local fishes like rohu, catala were breeded for commercial use. The next thing that was explored by the students were the large hatching tanks where fertilized eggs of different species were kept and grown. When the fishes are mature enough, they are then shifted to a bigger artificially made pond, where they complete the rest of their life cycle until further maturation and sale. As the students conversed with departmental staff, it became apparent that their work was not without its challenges. Overfishing, habitat destruction, and illegal fishing activities loomed large as threats to marine biodiversity. Limited funding and resources constrained their ability to enforce regulations effectively, highlighting the need for greater investment in fisheries management initiatives. The purpose of the visit was twofold: to gain insight into the inner workings of fisheries management and to understand the challenges and opportunities faced by those tasked with this crucial responsibility

Social Outreach Activity: Guppy Fish Release Initiative to Control Malarial Parasites

Date: 10/02/2024

Introduction:

The Department of Zoology in collaboration of TCSC Nature club initiated a project involving the rearing and release of guppy fishes in slum areas of Kandivali East. Guppy fishes, known for their voracious appetite for mosquito larvae, were released into stagnant water bodies contaminated with wastewater. The aim of this project was to control malarial parasites indirectly by reducing the mosquito population, thus minimizing the spread of malaria in the community.

Methodology:

1. Guppy Fish Rearing: Guppy fishes were reared in laboratory conditions under controlled environments to ensure their health and readiness for release.

2. Selection of Release Sites: Slum areas in Kandivali East with stagnant water bodies contaminated with wastewater were identified as suitable release sites.

3. Release of Guppy Fishes: Guppy fishes were released into the identified water bodies to establish a population capable of feeding on mosquito larvae.

4. Monitoring and Evaluation: Regular monitoring of the release sites was conducted to assess the effectiveness of the guppy fishes in controlling mosquito populations and reducing malarial parasites.

Impact:

1. Mosquito Larvae Control: The introduction of guppy fishes led to a significant reduction in mosquito larvae populations in the release sites. Guppy fishes actively fed on the larvae, thereby disrupting the mosquito breeding cycle.

2. Malarial Parasite Reduction: By controlling mosquito populations, the project indirectly contributed to the reduction of malarial parasites in the community. With fewer mosquitoes transmitting the disease, the risk of malaria transmission was mitigated.

3. Community Awareness: The project raised awareness among community members about the importance of vector control in preventing mosquito-borne diseases like malaria. Educational sessions were conducted to inform residents about the role of guppy fishes in mosquito control.

Conclusion:

The guppy fish release initiative organized by the Department of Zoology in collaboration of TCSC nature club proved to be an effective strategy for controlling malarial parasites indirectly. By harnessing the natural predation capabilities of guppy fishes, the project successfully reduced mosquito populations in slum areas of Kandivali East, thereby contributing to the prevention of malaria transmission. Continued efforts and collaboration between stakeholders are essential for sustaining the benefits of this initiative and expanding its impact in the community.

On Friday, 02 February 2024. Our reporting time was     7 am in the college. We left at around 7.30 am to reach our Destination. We took local train to reach our destination as it is far to our college and took us around 1 hour 30 minutes to reach there, we were very excited and amazed by the location and it beauty, we got to experience beautiful flora surrounded by us , and I realized why it’s the center of attraction for the tourists.

Jijamata Udyaan, also known as the Byculla Zoo and formerly Victoria Gardens, is a zoo and garden covering 50 acres located at Byculla, in the heart of Mumbai, India. It is the oldest public garden in Mumbai. After Indian independence, it was named after Jijamata, the mother of Shivaji, the first Maratha emperor.

In 1835, British administration granted a large plot of land in Sewri to the Agro Horticultural Society of Western India for a botanical garden known as Victoria Gardens after Queen-Empress Victoria. That land was later acquired for a European burial ground.[4] In 1861, construction of a new garden was commenced on 33 acres in the Mount Estate, Mazgaon (now included in Byculla). The flora from Sewri garden was transferred to this new garden named Jijamata Udyaan which was formally opened to the public by Lady Frere on 19 November 1862. Agro Horticultural Society of Western India continued to maintain Victoria Gardens till 1873 when the society's end led to the municipal corporation taking over the garden's upkeep. In 1890 the garden was extended by 15 acres especially for the zoo.
