NSS Activities & Events in Academic Year 2020-2021



NSS UNIT has been pro-active during the phase of this Pandemic and have been doing sustainable and developmental projects for society. The unit with well-fortified 250 volunteers which includes 135 male & 115 females have been enrolled and are under the guidance of 3 Program Officers Mr. Sushil Shinde, Dr. Mrs. Manju Singhania, and Mr. Mithilesh Vishwakarma. The unit has worked in rural areas, adopted areas and schools to serve the cause of society through survey, education and health issues through awareness program. NSS volunteer of unit participated in Covid 19 Awareness activities and also in extending help through food, ration kit, mask, sanitizer, arsenic album medicine distribution etc. 


        ORIENTATION MEETING:

Various online Orientation meeting were conducted by the programme officer to plan activities during pandemic. This session was held to inform volunteers about the programmes, planning and execution of projects. 

AREA BASED PROJECTS


  1. Tree Plantation & Conservation at Manori (Sunday Project) & Kojagiri Purnima Celebration.

Adopted Area: Shri Gagangiri Maharaj Ashram, Manori (Malad West)

No. of Volunteers: 60

We started visiting our adopted areas from 27th September 2020 after the pandemic phase. Around 60 volunteers have been actively participating in this project every Sunday. The nursery from last year which was in dilapidated condition was later conserved and maintained by volunteers. More than 5000 saplings were made and were conserved. The mulching work was carried out to reduce the compaction from the impact of heavy rain. 

On the eve of Kojagiri Purnima which was on 30th of October 2020, 1111 Diyas which had been washed, were sorted out in a systematic manner and placed in assigned places around the temples and were lit.

  







  1. Nirmalya Mukti (Flower Waste Treatment) 

Venue: Quantum Tower BMC Shed, S.V Road, Malad West.

No. of Volunteers: 30 

The unit worked in collaboration with OM SAI NIRMALYA NIRMULAN KENDRA, this project focused on processing the Nirmalya which was generated on the Ganesh Immersion sites into natural fertilizer for which the project was started on 12th of September 2020 volunteers worked for 10 days even though there was a pandemic phase around 30 volunteers participated in the project. The process of converting Nirmalya into fertilizer includes segregation of the flowers and plastic, threshing the flowers with the help of thresher, after 2 weeks bio inoculum was sprayed on dried waste letting it to decompose. Later remaining plastic & fertilizers were separated and the fertilizer made from nirmalya which is named as PUSHPAJ was packed into bags. 6 tons of nirmalya was collected and converted into 92 packets and 1 ton of organic fertilizers.



  1. PAPER BAG DISTRIBUTION


Venue: Thakur Village

No. of Volunteers: 40


  Paper bag making and distribution is the project which was initiated for a better environment by increasing the use of paper bags and avoiding the use of plastic bags because they contaminate the environment. The newspapers were collected from the library for making paper bags. The project was started from 2nd December 2020 and around 26,000 paper bags were made with waste newspapers while following social distancing due to pandemic and 10,000 paper bags were distributed by 40 volunteers. While distributing these paper bags at Thakur Village, vendors were taught how to make paper bags and why paper bags are a better alternative than plastic bags and how it reduces the disturbance to biological cycle and how to take a small step for better environment.



 

  1. Forest development Project 


Venue: Damunagar

No. of Volunteers: 15 

This project is undertaken by NSS volunteers and was started on 20th February 2020 under the guidance of President Award Winner Environmentalist Mrs Nusrat Khatri and Mr Afzal Khatri. 15 volunteers undertook the conservation of trees planted by Inner wheel organisation at Damunagar where residents of the area receive water once in two weeks due to which the surviving rate of flora is moderate. In such conditions Drip Irrigation method is adopted to increase the surviving rate of plants. At first the whole area was cleaned and then stones were used to make border around the plants and they were also used to make path for the local people and visitors. For bringing drip irrigation into practice around 100 scrap bottles which were collected by the volunteers were pierced from the caps and were placed inverted into the land close to the plants, due to drip irrigation water does not get collected and the evaporation rate is decreased due to which adequate amount of water gets supplied to plants fulfilling the maximum of development of forest. 










  1. RATION KIT DISTRIBUTION

 

Venue: Wada

No. of Volunteers: 30

On 10th May 2020, 65 BPL villagers of Sai Devli Kanchad Palghar were provided with the ration kit consisting of Edible oil, sugar, Dal, 2 pulses masala, turmeric tea powder, soap. 1 lakh rupees were contributed for the project by ex-volunteers of our unit. Around 115 families of the village were also provided with hand sanitizers, 600 masks. Along with above all homeopathy medicines as per Ayush Ministry in consultation with Central Council for Research in Homeopathy (CCRH), Arsenic album 30 has been given to villagers and to be taken as an immunity booster against Corona Virus. While distribution Deputy Sarpanch, Police Patil, and Smt. Shalinitai Patil were present. 





COLLEGE LEVEL PROJECTS

  1. BLOOD DONATION DRIVE 


VENUE: Thakur College of Science and Commerce & Andheri station

No. of Volunteers: 100

There were two blood donation drives which were organized by our unit in collaboration with JAGJIVAN RAM HOSPITAL, SHREE SATYA SAI SEVA SAMITI AND NAIR HOSPITAL in which volunteers of our unit made a huge contribution by promoting the drives to the common public with the help of banners and posters and convinced them to do the deed of donation their blood. NAIR BLOOD BANK AND JAGJIVAN RAM BLOOD BANK were the blood banks which were helped to collect blood.  111 and 126 are the numbers of blood donors recorded on the drives which were on 20th and 21st December 2020 and on 31st of march 2021 respectively. Throughout the process the blood donors were provided with comfortable and sanitized surroundings and were guided properly by the volunteers.





       




  1. BEAUTIFICATION 

VENUE: JOGESHWARI HINDU SAMRAT BALASAHEB THACKREY MAHANAGAR PALIKA SCHOOL, MAHAKALI CAVES

No. of Volunteers: 8

The project of beautification of HINDU SAMRAT BALASAHEB THACKREY MAHANAGAR PALIKA SCHOOL was undertaken by the unit and worked with CONNECT FOR organisation in collaboration with PYRAMID FOUNDATION. 8 volunteers took part in this project on 14th of February 2021. The motto of this beautification project was to teach students through wall paintings how to be more respectful towards our environment and to motivate the students through quotes and help them study while they look at sketches and paintings. This also helped to improve the appearance of the school. 

  



  1. ELECTRICITY SURVEY 

VENUE: THAKUR COLLEGE OF SCIENCE AND COMMERCE

No. of Volunteers: 10     

In order to contribute in conservation of electricity, an electricity survey was done on 17th & 18th December 2020 by 10 volunteers. The count of number of fans and lights along with types of air conditioners, projectors in whole college premises were noted and the lights which were needed to be changed were noted, normal lights were changed to led lights and different ways of saving electricity were discussed which were later brought to practice.



  1. VOLUNTEERSHIP FOR COLLEGE FESTIVALS


VENUE: THAKUR COLLEGE OF SCIENCE & COMMERCE

No. of Volunteers: 50

NSS Unit was assigned the duty of security for the annual college fest TARAANGAN AND TRISHNA which was held on 29th 30th and 31st of January, 50 volunteers took care that the norms of social distancing were followed. 


  1. Road Safety Project Awareness Week

No of Volunteers: 

The NSS Volunteers were engaged in Road Safety Awareness which was guided by Senior PI of Dahisar Carriage Department, Mr. Jadhav. The project was held on 6th of February 2020. The traffic police officers assisted the volunteers at the traffic signals and helped them to guide the general public about the traffic rules with the help of posters and banners.  800 reflector strips were stuck on the vehicle. These reflectors help drivers during night time in order to avoid accidents in places with no street lights. 















  1. BOOK BINDING PROJECT


VENUE: THAKUR COLLEGE OF SCIENCE & COMMERCE

No. of Volunteers: 30

In order to bring into practice, the motto of REUSE the Unit decided to make use of partly used books and journals on 9th January 2021 which was collected from library by tearing it, and later stapling them together and binding them and generating new usable books. 250 books were made by 30 volunteers and distributed books to students in Wada Government Schools. 




MEGA EVENT

  1. RATION DISTRIBUTION TO MUMBAI DABBAWALAS 

VENUE: THAKUR COLLEGE OF SCIENCE AND COMMERCE

No. of Volunteers: 60

On the occasion of 51st National Service Scheme Foundation Day on 24th September 2020. Thakur College of Science and Commerce, Kandivali and Thakur Ramnarayan College, Dahisar collaborated with NGO`s like Mr. Sushil Jaju from “MY GREEN SOCIETY”, Mr. Deepak Vishwakarma from “MAKING THE DIFFERNCE FOUNDATION” and DONATEKART organized a ration kit distribution inside the premises. In the pandemic phase many Dabbawallas had no source of income due to the offices being closed down so the organization took the initiative to provide food grains and other important necessities for around 1200 dabbawallas to make 51st NSS’s Foundation day memorable with the motto of “NOT ME BUT YOU”. 60 volunteers along with Ex-Volunteers were involved and played a massive role in this project. 6 trucks of ration were unloaded the volunteers provided their helping hand to make more than 5000 packets and worked for 10-12 hours each day for 5 days from 19th September to 23rd September for packing the ration kit containing 50kg of Ration which includes 20 kg Wheat flour, 12kg Rice, 4kgPulses,4liters Oil,6kgs of dals, 2kgSalt and 2kg Spices distribution of arsenic album medicine was done to dabbawallas in order to increase their immune power to fight against the deadly virus . Shri Jitendra Singh Ji Trustee of Thakur Educational Trust, Shri Sagar Singh Corporator of Kandivali, Mr. Ramesh Deokar, University of Mumbai NSS programme officer were present on this occasion and handed over the kits to Mumbai Dabbawallas.  This Gentleness Event was supported by Prof. Sudhir Puranik, NSS Director University of Mumbai. Dr. (Mrs.) C.T Chakraborty Principal Thakur College of Science and Commerce and Mr. Sushil Shinde NSS Programme Officer and District Co-ordinator of Mumbai Western Suburb. Dr. Ravish Singh, Principal of Thakur Ramnarayan College, guided and motivated the volunteers for this noble cause and appreciated their efforts and courage of providing their helping hand during the pandemic phase.










UNIVERSITY LEVEL PROJECT


  1. SEED BALL MAKING 


VENUE: SURAJBA VIDYA MANDIR, JOGESHWARI- EAST

No. of Volunteers: 6 

 The Unit participated in the event which was organised by three organisations MY GREEN SOCIETY, KESHAV SHRUSTI AND ROTARY CLUB. A total of 6 volunteers participated on 15th of August 2020 for this event. Volunteers made small seed balls with fertilizers mixed in them which can later be used for plantation and with this project the team made a World record of 19,500 seedballs in a day which was appreciated by all the organization for the effort of participating while lockdown.




  1. MAZHI VASUNDHARA 


VENUE: JAYALEELA BANQUET, GOREGAON STATION-WEST

No. of Volunteers: 20

NSS volunteers had collaborated with TARGET PUBLICATIONS on 22nd February 2020 to conduct citizenship survey. The project lasted for 31 days and drawbacks of currently elected person according to citizen were noted. This survey was in concern about citizen’s thought of BMC’s work and feedback regarding what improvements are required for better administration by the government.   


      



  1. E-Waste Collection Drive


No. of Volunteers: 5 

The NSS Unit participated in “MAZHI VASUNDHARA” a scheme launched by Aaditya Thackeray which was an E-waste Collection Drive that covers all the colleges of Mumbai. This drive was assisted by 5 volunteers and was conducted on 6th & 10th February 2021. Volunteers collected E-waste from the different colleges . The waste includes things like paper, plastic, metal and electronics items. The main objective of this project was to promote and use of 3R`s Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, these 3R`s help to cut down on the amount of waste we throw away. They can still be helpful in many other ways. 2 tons of E-waste was collected from this drive making it a successful one.


  












Achievements

  1. Ms. Priya Yadav ( T.Y.Bsc ) was selected for National Republic Day Parade Camp 2021, Rajpath, New Delhi. She is the third student getting selected for RD Parade consecutively for three years. Mr. Adarsh Chaubey(RDC 2019) and Ms. Akshata Kadam (RDC 2020) were selected in earlier years.



  1. Mr. Sushil Shinde NSS Programme Officer was appointed as District Nodal Officer for mitigating Covid Emergency by State Government. He headed the Food Helpline Number initiated by NSS Cell University of Mumbai and Blood donation drives on the Railway Stations.
