NSS Activities & Events in Academic Year 2022-2023



The NSS unit of Thakur College of Science and Commerce was formed in 2002 and had been deliberately working for the revolutionary solutions of the social issues. The strength of the unit in this year was of 300 volunteers who had conducted various activities in college and other eight adopted areas under the guidance of Program Officers Mr. Sushil Shinde, Dr. Manju Singhania and Mr. Mithilesh Vishwakarma.The unit has been constantlyengaged in activities which aims to bring a revolution in the society and make it better.

AREA BASED ACTIVITIES

AREA BASED PROJECT-1 CONSERVATION AT MANORI

Tree Plantation And Conservation At Manori

Date of commencement: 3rd April,2022.

Frequency : Every Sunday

Shri Gagangiri Maharaj Ashram,Manori, was adopted by the NSS unit in 2009, since then the volunteers of the unit had been visiting to the ashram every Sunday to conserve the 75 acres of the premises. In these 14 years the volunteers of the unit workedcontinuously, converting the barren island into oxygen hub of the Mumbai. The volunteers visit every Sunday and conduct various activities to preserve and conserve nature, support the ashram, and maintain the sanity of the place, which includes planting of trees, helping the ashram members to prepare sacraments for the devotees, watering the plants and conserving them. This year the volunteers have planted1100 saplings and trees and conserved them throughout the year on the regular basis.

Khojagiri Poornima

Date of commencement: 9th October,2022.

The NSS unit of Thakur College of Science and Commerce in association with Shri Gagangiri Maharaj Ashram, Manori organized the mega fest of Khojagiri Poornima on 9th October, 2022.  Khojagiri Poornima is celebrated across India with great enthusiasm as a festival where Mother Nature is been worshipped and people are awake whole night dancing, celebrating and get blessed by Goddess Lakshmi on the night of full moon. The volunteers had been preparing for the mega fest from the month of August where they washed the earthen lamps, cleaned the premises, and forest areas. Approximately 30,000 devotees visited the ashram on this auspicious day. The NSS volunteers helped the devotees and coordinated them to the temple and sacrament. A special event is also celebrated on this occasion where prefilled arranged earthen lamps by volunteers were lightened by devotees around the trees which resembled their significance on this mankind. This festival was a divine experience for all the devotees as well as volunteers who actively participated. Cumulatively around two lakhs earthen lamps were lightened during that night.




AREA BASED PROJECT-2

Paper bag Making and Distribution

 Date of commencement: 23rd June,2022.

As an initiative to promote the ‘No Plastic Movement’ the NSS unit of Thakur College of Science and Commerce conducts the paper bag distribution project in Thakur Village. The unit had been conducting this project on regular intervals where recycled paper bags which were made by old newspapers were distributed among the local vendors of Thakur Village. The volunteers also created awareness among the people about hazardous effects of plastic on environment and introduced them to various alterative to reduce the use of non-degradable plastic. This year around15000 bags were made from which11000 paper bags weredistributed by the unit for free of cost.

AREA BASED PROJECT-3 

Medical Camp and Ration Distribution At Kosbad

Date of commencement: 3rd April,2022.

Frequency : Second Sunday of Every Month.

 Our NSS unit in association with Shri Satya Sai Seva Samiti conducts this monthly project which takes place on second Sunday of each month for the past 12 years. The primary aim of this project is to provide free medical check-ups, medicines,and ration to the needy villagers. Our NSS volunteers visit and provide a helping hand to organize the medical camp and to aid support to the doctors to dispense chargeless medical facilities along with managing medical records of the patients.

494 tribal villagers were treated by the doctors.694 ration kits were distributed to the villagers.

Periodic interactions were done on various topics such as Health, Sanitization and Gram Swachhata. Our female volunteers as well as female member of Satya Sai Seva organization also interacted with girls and women educating them about menstrual hygiene. Stationaries and books were also distributed to the children for educational purposes.

2000kgs lentils and 4000 kgs of rice along with clothes and books were distributed throughout the year.


AREA BASED PROJECT-4 


Blood Donation Drives


Date of commencement: 14th April,2022.

Blood is essential to help patients survive surgeries, cancer treatment, making a generous donation. Looking after the significance of blood donation, The NSS Unit of Thakur College of Science and Commerce had been organizing blood donation camps and drives for the past many years. This year the unit hadorganized five blood donation drives throughout in collaboration with HDFC Bank, ABVP, ABTYP, Shri Sathya Sai seva Samiti, Shri Sanjay Sai Seva Samiti and Borivali Blood Bank throughout the year. The drives were conducted at Thakur College of Science and Commerce, Nirmate Mohite wagh (Borivali) and Borivali railway Station. These blood units were donated to Borivali Blood Bank, Meenatai Thackrey Blood Bank and Rajiv Gandhi Blood Bank for the treatment of economically weak patients suffering from Thalassemia major and also who needs blood units for surgery and other treatment purposes. The unit has tremendously worked and successfully collected720 blood units throughout the year.


AREA BASED PROJECT-5


Nirmalya Mukti Project

Date of commencement: 8th September,2022.

The unit in collaboration with OSNNK had conducted this Programme in order to spread awareness about disposal of holy waste which includes garlands and degraded fruits which are offered as sacraments. The motto was to reduce the pollution of water bodies due to improper disposing activities. The volunteers also took an initiative to generate organic fertilizer from those waste. This year the volunteers conducted surveys at various places spreading awareness about it.

Coastal Clean-Up Drive

Date of commencement: 26th November,2022.

This year the unit has collaborated with ‘FOR FUTURE INDIA’ and participated in ‘Coastal Premier League’, which aimed to clean the coastline of Mumbai through an intercollegiate league. All the colleges of Mumbai had participated and clean-up drives were conducted on beaches viz Manori beach, Gorai beach, Bhayandar Khadi, Velankanni Beach and Mangroves of Bhayandar east.


Book Binding

Date of commencement: 16th December,2022.

The NSS Unit of Thakur College of Science and Commerce had conducted a Book Binding project in college premises. The aim of the project was to recycle papers from old notebooks and practical books then made books from them. These books were donated to the library of Vatsalaya Ashram, where the special camp was conducted. A total of 200 books were made by volunteers and donated to the children.



AREA BASED PROJECT-6


Samarthan Project

Date of commencement: 13th December,2022.

The NSS Unit of Thakur college of Science and Commerce in collaboration with an organization organized ‘SAMARTHAN PROJECT’ which was conducted in the college from 13th till 28th December, 2022.  The project was conducted to express gratitude to the donors and supporters of the organization. The volunteers along with the members of the organization prepared gift hampers for the supporters of the organization. The volunteers prepared tea coasters, tea bottles, etc. during the project. In this project the group of volunteers enthusiastically volunteered throughout the project and prepared 1500 coasters, filled 750 tea- bottles and prepared 750 hampers which were sent as a token of gratitude to the supporters of the organization.


Rakhi Project

Date of commencement: 4th August,2022.

The NSS Unit of Thakur College of Science and Commerce had organized a ‘Rakhi Project’ in collaboration with Seva Vivek NGO, which aimed to empower tribal women. On the occasion of Raksha Bandhan, the NSS Unit took an initiative to empower the women by selling their handmade Rakhis in college premises. This project was conducted on six different days. The project was a massive success where the volunteers actively participated and generated revenue of around Rs. 10000, which helped the Tribal women to attain financial stability.


SWACHHATA ABHIYAN

Date of commencement: 15th October,2022.

The unit in collaboration with Shri Sathya Sai Seva Samiti had conducted cleanliness drives with an aim to promote the Swachhata Bharat Mission. The drives were conducted at Pathway to Gorai beach,Borivali and a School. Around 200kgs of waste was collected by the volunteers during these two activities

COLLEGE LEVEL ACTIVITIES

Pulse Polio Campaign

Date of commencement: 18th June,2022.

 To accomplish the aim of making India Polio free, the unit took an initiative of conducting pulse polio immunization drive. The unit collaborated with ESIS Hospital, Kandivali. The volunteers were trained by the doctors and under their guidance the volunteers conducted the campaigns in Akurli, Kandivali. This year two campaigns were conducted where 1700 children were immunized, contributing to the accomplishment of the vision of ‘Polio Free India’.

Security Duty For College Events

Date of commencement: 20th – 25th January,2023.

The unit had collaborated with team of Taarangan which is an event organizing committee of college and helped them conduct various promotional events and the annual intercollegiate fest of Taarangan and Trishna by providing them in security aid to the guest celebrities.

Republic day celebration

Date of commencement: 26th January,2023.

On the occasion of 74 republic day, the college had celebrated the day with great zeal and enthusiasm . the unit had marched in parade along with the NCC unit of college representing the perseverance and selflessness of nss volunteers towards society.



NSS Day Celebration

Date of commencement: 24th September,2022.

On the occasion of 53rdNSSDay the unit of the college celebrated it with the children of Montfort Children’s Home. The volunteers played games and spent some time with the children creating memorable moments for children.

AdultLiteracy – Teaching Peon

Date of commencement: 19th October,2022.

The unit had taken an initiative where the volunteers helped anon-teaching staff of the college with subjects like English,Math, and Science. The volunteers helped him to come up with the educational gap and clear his matric examination.

Dental Check Up

Date of commencement: 19th January,2023.

The unit in collaboration with The Lions Club of Lokhandwala had organized a free dental checkup camp in the college premises. This activity aimed to promote significance of oral hygiene and create awareness among the people. 46 patients were diagnosed and guided through this activity.

COSL Session

Date of commencement: 19th January,2023.

The unit in collaboration with The Lions Club of Lokhandwala organizedCOSL training session where 48 volunteers were taught about the first aid to be given in the situation of sudden cardiac arrest. This activity aimed to prepare oneself for any mishap in the future.

UNIVERSITY LEVEL PROJECTS

HIV/AIDS AWARENESS CAMPAIGN

Date of commencement: 1st December,2022.

The NSS Unit of Thakur College of Science and Commerce conducted the HIV and AIDS awareness campaign in college premises on account of ‘World AIDS Day’ that is 1st December. The volunteers went from class to class educating students about HIV and AIDS and also tied red ribbon on the arms of teaching and non-teaching staff as a symbol of support for the people suffering from HIV and AIDS. The volunteers tried to accomplish the motive of the campaign which is to eradicate the stigma and misconception about HIV and AIDS.

BHAJAN SANDHYA

Date of commencement: 2nd October,2022.

 University of Mumbai organized Bhajan Sandhya on Gateway of India from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm on the auspicious day Of Gandhi Jayanti. The NSS Unit of Thakur College of Science and Commerce attended the Bhajan Sandhya. Our program officer Prof. Sushil R. Shinde was also felicitated for receiving the National Award for the year 2020-2021,which wasfollowed by the evening prayer and Swachha Bharat Pledge by all the people present over there.

YOGA USTAV

Date of commencement: 19th June,2022.

The NSS Unit collaborated with Brahma Kumaris Upvan, Borivali to organize "Yog Utsav " on 19/06/22 on the occasion ofInternational Yoga Day. Ustrasana, Kakasana, Ucha-Attahas Hasayana and Yog Nidra were practiced in the presence of Yog Acharya Prathishta Ji and Brahma Kumari Divya Ji. the NSS volunteers attended this yoga session with NSS volunteers of 8 different colleges.

ANNUAL PLANNING SESSION

Date of commencement: 24th August,2022.

The NSS Unit of Thakur College of Science and Commerce in collaboration with NSS Cell University of Mumbai organized the NSS Annual Planning Session for Program officers on 24th August, 2022, in the Seminar Hall of Thakur College of Science and Commerce, Kandivali East. 

 The session was conducted with an objective of better functioning and coordination of NSS units in Districts of Mumbai Zone. In this session various topics were discussed such as enrollment process of volunteers, preparation of Proforma, NSS annual accounts, Scrutiny process, Selection of Projects and hours allocation of projects, etc.

Later, District coordinators, Dr. Virendra Shekhawat, Prof. Kranti Ukey, Prof. Nikhil Kharkhanis and Prof. Sushil Shinde, who clarified all the doubts of POs of their respective zones. Later, a demo of Proforma, Proposal of IG award winners, Regular accounts and Reports were showcased to the Program Officers. The session was an illuminating one, where 150 POs from all the zones of Mumbai sub-urban and Mumbai city were present.   

TIRANGA RALLY AT KALINA UNIVERSITY

Date of commencement: 13th August,2022.

The NSS unit in collaboration with MCMG organized "Tiranga Rally" as India completed 75 years of Independence, celebrating "Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav'. The volunteers conducted a rally in college premises & nearby localities. The aim was to make 75th Independence Day significant & accomplish the mission of 'Har Ghar Tiranga campaign' The volunteers conducted this patriotic rally on 4 different days & venues including Kalina University where few volunteers actively participated.






SPECIAL ACHIEVEMENTS

  • Mr. Sushil Ram Shinde received the President award for Best NSS Program Officer 2020-21.

  • The NSS Unit of our college was awarded as the Best NSS unit 2020-21 National as well as State level Award Ranking 1st in State of Maharashtra 

  • Ms. Priya Gupta Selected for the NIC (National Integration camp) held at University of Mumbai.

  • Ms. Deepshikha Singh and Mr. Saksham Mishra were selected for the Pre-State selections for NRD Camp held at Shivaji University, Kolhapur.

  • Ms. Sachi Saunshimath was selected for the National Adventure Camp held at ABVIMAS, Solang, Manali Himachal Pradesh. 

  • Ms. Deepshikha Singh was selected for the Pre-NRD Camp held at Sardar Patel University, Anand, Gujarat. 

  • Ms. Deepshikha Singh is representing our NSS unit by marching on Kartavya path New Delhi on 26th January, 2023.
