The NSS unit of Thakur College of Science and Commerce was formed in 2002 and had been deliberately working for solutions of the social issues. The strength of the unit in this year was of 300 volunteers who conducted various activities in college and other seven adopted areas under the guidance of Program Officer Mr. Sushil Shinde, Dr. Manju Singhania and Mr. Mithilesh Vishwakarma .The unit has been constantly engaged in activities which aim to bring a positive change in society and make it better.
AREA BASED ACTIVITIES
AREA BASED PROJECT-1 CONSERVATION AT MANORI:
Tree plantation and conservation at Manori
Date: 6thApril, 2023.
Frequency: Every Sunday
The Shri Gagangiri Maharaj Ashram in Manori, Malad(west) was adopted by the NSS unit in 2009. Since then, volunteers of the unit have been visiting the ashram every Sunday to conserve its 75 acres of premises. Over the past 14 years, the volunteers of the unit have worked continuously, transforming the barren land into a fertile forest, also known as the ‘Oxygen hub’ of Mumbai. During their weekly visits, the volunteers conduct various activities to preserve and conserve nature, support the ashram, and maintain the serenity of the place. These activities include planting trees, assisting ashram members, watering plants, and ensuring their conservation. This year, the volunteers have planted 1150 saplings, diligently caring for them throughout the year on a regular basis.
Khojagiri Poornima

The NSS unit of Thakur College of Science and Commerce, in association with Shri Gagangiri Maharaj Ashram in Manori, organized 'लक्ष लक्ष दीप सोहळा' on the occasion of Kojagiri Purnima on 24th October, 2023. Kojagiri Purnima was celebrated with great enthusiasm across India as a festival of Mother Nature, where people stay awake the whole night, dancing and celebrating to receive blessings from Goddess Lakshmi on the night of the full moon. The volunteers had been preparing for this mega festival one month prior, during which they washed the earthen lamps and cleaned the premises and nearby forest area. Approximately 25,000 to 30,000 devotees visited the ashram.
The volunteers assisted the devotees and guided them to the temple and the sacrament area. A special event was also held on this occasion, where pre-filled earthen lamps were arranged in different religious symbols to represent their significance to mankind. Cumulatively, 200,000 earthen lamps were lit on that night. This festival was a divine experience for both the participating volunteers and devotees alike.
AREA BASED PROJECT-2
PAPER BAG MAKING AND DISTRIBUTION
Date: 6th July, 2023
The NSS unit, under the initiative to promote the 'No Plastic Movement', organized Paper Bag Making and Distribution. The unit conducted the project at regular intervals where recycled paper bags made out of old newspapers were distributed among the local vendors of Thakur Village. The volunteers also created awareness about the hazardous effects of plastic waste and introduced various alternatives to it. In total, 9000 paper bags were made and 3000 paper bags were distributed.
AREA BASED PROJECT-3
MEDICAL CAMP AND RATION DISTRIBUTION AT KOSBAD
Date of Commencement: 9th April, 2023
Frequency of project: Every Second Sunday of the Month
Our NSS unit, in association with Shri Satya Sai Seva Samiti, conducts this monthly project which takes place on the second Sunday of each month for the past 13 years at Kosbad Village, Palghar. The aim of this project is to provide free medical checkups and rations to the needy villagers. Our NSS unit volunteers visit and provide a helping hand to organize the medical camp, aid the doctors in providing chargeless medical facilities, and manage medical records of the patients.
During the project, 465 tribal villagers were treated by the doctors and 650 ration kits were distributed to the villagers. Periodic interactions were held on various topics such as health, sanitation, and Gram Swachhata. Female volunteers, as well as female members of the Satya Sai Seva organization, also interacted with girls and women to educate them about menstrual hygiene. Stationeries and books were also distributed to children for educational purposes.
Throughout the year, around 670 kgs of lentils and 1240 kgs of rice were distributed, along with countless books. This year, around 500 mango saplings were distributed as well.
AREA BASED PROJECT – 4
BLOOD DONATION DRIVE-01
The NSS Unit of Thakur College of Science and Commerce, in collaboration with the Lions Club, organized a blood donation drive on July 17 in collaboration with Borivali Blood Bank and with Nair Blood Bank on July 18, 2023. Volunteers from the NSS unit actively participated in promoting blood donation within the college and nearby areas, providing hospitality to blood donors, and assisting donors throughout the donation process and donor registration. On the first day, 81 volunteers participated, and 103 donors donated their blood to Borivali Blood Bank. On the second day, 75 volunteers took part, and 106 donors donated their blood to Nair Blood Bank.
BLOOD DONATION DRIVE -02
The NSS unit of Thakur College of Science and Commerce organized a blood donation drive in collaboration with the Lions Club Millennium and Indian Red Cross Society Blood Bank on October 4, 2023, at Borivali Station. The aim was to collect blood units to assist needy patients who cannot afford it. Volunteers from the unit engaged in hospitality for donors, registration, and promotion throughout Borivali Station. In this donor camp, a total of 21 volunteers participated, and a total of 37 blood bags were collected.
BLOOD DONATION DRIVE -03
The NSS unit of Thakur College of Science and Commerce organized a two days blood donation drive in collaboration with HDFC Bank. On 8th December, 96 Volunteers along with Borivali Blood Bank collected 124 blood units and on 9th December, 83 Volunteers with Meenatai Thakre Blood Bank continued the drive with 125 blood units. A total of 249 units were collected in this duration.
In concluding all the drives, 495 successful blood units were collected.

BALWADI PROJECT
Date of Commencement: 24th August, 2023
The NSS unit of their college collaborates with Soul of God School to organize the Balwadi Project. In this project, volunteers from our unit engage in Bal Vikas and interact with them through enjoyable games and activities. Typically, volunteers teach the children poetry and songs. The children involved are usually in the 1st to 3rd standard. The Balwadi Project frequents every month and on an average, 10 volunteers participate in this project.

Rakhi Project
Date of commencement: 10th August 2023
The NSS Unit of Thakur College of Science and Commerce organized a 'Rakhi Project' in collaboration with Seva Vivek, aiming to empower tribal women. On the occasion of Raksha Bandhan, the NSS Unit initiated the empowerment by selling handmade eco-friendly Rakhis crafted by these women, primarily using bamboo, within the college premises. Additionally, volunteers facilitated the sale of bracelets, keychains, earrings, and chocolates made by mentally challenged children, in collaboration with V.D. Indian Society for Mentally Challenged. The project was a massive success, with active participation from volunteers. A total of 751 units of Rakhis were sold, generating revenue amounting to Rs. 19,760, which notably contributed to the financial stability of the tribal women. Furthermore, 184 units of bracelets, keychains, earrings, and chocolates were sold, generating revenue worth Rs. 6,920.

Flashmob (HIV / AIDS)
Date of commencement: 11th September, 2023
The NSS Unit of Thakur College of Science and Commerce prepared an act for spreading awareness on HIV / AIDS and performed the same on 25th and 26th September. The act promoted knowledge on HIV / AIDS and volunteers sent social messages on the same.

PULSE POLIO DRIVE

The NSS Unit of Thakur College of Science and Commerce collaborated with the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai to organize a pulse polio immunization drive to immunize the young generation of India against Polio. Three major Drives have been organized and carried out by the NSS unit Volunteers. The drive aimed to immunize children against the poliovirus, contributing to India's polio-free status. The booths for the same are set up at various locations in Akurli and Damupada.

COLLEGE LEVEL PROJECT
Mega Beach Cleanup Drive
Date: 22nd April, 2023
This drive was held at Uttan beach in Bhayandar west on 22nd April, 2023 by the NSS unit of Thakur College of Science and Commerce on the Occasion of World Earth Day. A team of 18 NSS volunteers aimed to eliminate the garbage and debris that had accumulated on the beach. The volunteers collected a total of 60 kgs of waste which included raw cloth pieces, plastic bottles, plastic bags, wrappers and other harmful materials that were detrimental to the environment and marine life.
Convocation Ceremony
Date: 27th April, 2023
The volunteers from the NSS unit of Thakur College of Science and Commerce helped the exam committee of TCSC to organize a convocation ceremony on 27th April, 2023. A team of 20 NSS volunteers helped teachers with different task such as distributing degrees, crowd controlling, etc. The chief guest of the event was the Principal of TCSC Dr. Chaitali Chakraborty. Dr. Chakraborty enlighten students with insights and experience from her life for a successful career. A total of 1,036 students were convened in this ceremony.
International Yoga Day (Yog Utsav)
Date: 21st June, 2023
A total of 31 volunteers from NSS unit of Thakur College of Science and Commerce participated in Yoga session organized by Thakur College of Science and Commerce in collaboration with Shri. Ambika Yog Kutir. In this session volunteers were taught 20 yoga poses suggested by the Government of India and were also enlightened about the practice of meditation. After the session the principal of TCSC Dr. Chaitali Chakraborty addressed the students about her own experience with practicing yoga and how students should incorporate it into their day to day lives for their own benefits. At the end all the volunteers pledged to practice yoga everyday with great enthusiasm.
Independence Day

On the occasion of 77th Independence Day, Thakur College of Science and Commerce and Thakur College of Engineering and Technology organized a celebration. The Tricolor flag was hoisted by honorable chief guest Shri. Thakur Vijendra .K Singh. Volunteers of NSS unit of TCSC performed a street play for the “Panch Pran” campaign. They also organized a rally to raise awareness for the same. Over 73 volunteers of NSS unit of TCSC distributed over 300 paper bags to promote awareness about eco-friendly alternatives.
NSS Day Celebration
Date: 24th September, 2023
In collaboration with Monfort Orphanage, the NSS unit of Thakur College of Science and Commerce organized an NSS Day Celebration. A total of 60 volunteers participated in this celebration of NSS Day with the children of the orphanage. Volunteers organized different activities for the children, such as drawing and singing. They also donated books and play objects to the orphanage.
Rally for Dengue Awareness
Date: 11th October, 2023
Over 31 volunteers participated in the Rally for Dengue Awareness organized by the NSS unit of Thakur College of Science and Commerce in collaboration with ESIC Hospital, Damunagar. This rally took place in Thakur Village and surrounding areas. Volunteers chanted slogans such as, “Dushit Jal ko Hatana hai, Smaj ko Dengue se Bachana hai” (We have to remove dirty water to save society from dengue) and “Jan Jan ka yahi hai Nara, Dengue Mukta ho Vishua hamara” (This is the slogan of every person, let our world be free of dengue).
Ekta Diwas Pledge

On the auspicious occasion of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Jayanti the NSS unit of Thakur College of Science and Commerce organized a Ekta Diwas Pledge. Total of 30 volunteers took pledge in two different languages, i.e., English and Hindi. Volunteers took the pledge, to preserve the unity, integrity and security of our nation and to build a nation envisioned by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and strive to spread this message among our fellow countrymen.
Children Day Celebration
Date: 14th November, 2023
This project was organized in collaboration with TOUCH NGO on the occasion of Children Day at Veer Savarkar Garden Borivali West. Students from nearby schools and colleges participated in the drawing competition. 27 volunteers from NSS of Thakur College of Science and Commerce participated in this celebration where they helped in providing assistance to the students as well as their parents. As soon as the drawing competition ended, volunteers distributed participation certificates and refreshments to all the students. Concluding the project, volunteers helped in the distribution of prizes.
RRC AIDS Week
Date: 1st to 4th December, 2023
This event was organized by the NSS unit of Thakur College of Science and Commerce in collaboration with the Red Ribbon Club. First two days of this event included multiple promotional activities and the final day included many competitions like face painting, online and offline poster making competition. These competitions were judged by 4 faculty members of TCSC. At the end all the participants were provided with participation certificates and winners were awarded with prizes.
CPR Training
Date: 15th December 2023
In collaboration with Revive Heart Foundation, the NSS unit of Thakur College of Science and Commerce organized a CPR training for volunteers on 15th December, 2023 at TCSC campus. 55 volunteers took part in this session where they were taught how to administer Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), understand the difference between a heart attack and cardiac arrest, maintain calm in an emergency situation and use an electronic kit to aid a person recovery from cardiac arrest. The training session was conducted by Holy Family Hospital, Bandra.
Security Duty for College Events
Date: 18th to 20th December, 2023
A team of 100 volunteers of the NSS unit of Thakur College of Science and Commerce assisted the TAARANGAN committee with crowd management for the event of TAARANGAN. The volunteers performed tasks such as crowd controlling, ensuring a smooth flow of the event, and other related responsibilities.
Deep Cleaning Drive
Date: 14th January, 2024
The NSS unit of Thakur College of Science and Commerce in collaboration with the local authorities organized an Anti-plastic rally in Thakur Village. In this rally, the honorable Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Shri Eknath Shinde, participated and delivered a message encouraging a green lifestyle. The CM also addressed volunteers, emphasizing the significance of a green future. Total of 35 volunteers participated in this rally.
Army Day
Date: 15th January, 2024
On the auspicious day of Army Day a guest lecture by Major Pawan Kumar Thapliyal was organized for the students of Thakur College of Science and Commerce and Thakur Polytechnic College. The lecture proved to be enlightening for NSS and NCC cadets as they got to know about the crucial side of civil services and what the job entails. At the end of the session Major Pawan also answered some of the individual questions and explained the roles and responsibility an individual must carry out. 24 NSS volunteers participated in this lecture.
Beach Clean Up Drive

A team of 21 volunteers participated in a 2 hours Beach Clean Up Drive organized by the NSS unit of Thakur College of Science and Commerce at Meethi River, Mahim (W). The volunteers cleaned the beach while making a human chain and collected over 120 kilograms of waste. This Clean Up drive by NSS was to ensure a clean public environment.
Republic Day Celebration

On 26th January, 2024 a Republic Day’s Celebration in Thakur College of Engineering and Technology was organized. After the flag hoisting ceremony, the NCC cadets did many activities such as parade, silent parade and dance and the NSS volunteers of Thakur College of Science and Commerce presented some social topics such as equality, secularism and right to vote. 104 volunteers participated in this celebration.
Meri Mati Mera Desh
Date of Commencement: 9th August, 2023
The main objective of the project was to undertake the Panch Pran Pledge under the Central Government Program. Over 100 volunteers took a pledge to contribute for our nation’s development along with the Principal Dr. C.T. Chakraborty of Thakur College of Science and Commerce, and many other faculties. Everyone present put a handful of soil in the Amrut Kalash which was later taken to classes and nearby college areas. Volunteers of NSS also did PR activities in the campus of TCSC regarding this project. The volunteers held a plantation drive to promote the program of Meri Mati Mera Desh.
On 15th September, 2023 our volunteers met Shri. Anurag Thakur, Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports during his visit to Mumbai. He appreciated our volunteers work in this program initiated by honorable P.M. Shri. Narendra Modi. He offered a fistful of soil in the Amrut Kalash prepared by our NSS volunteers.
One of our volunteer Mr. Vinayak Yadav went to New Delhi for the Programme of Amrit Kalash Yatra. The aim of this programme was to remember the sacrifices of the immortal martyrs.
UNIVERSITY LEVEL PROJECTS
Hundredth Man Ki Baat

The University of Mumbai organized a screening on the event of Hundredth Man Ki Baat by the Prime Minister of India. Total of 14 volunteers from NSS of Thakur College Of Science and Commerce took part in this event where they were taught the importance of Maan Ki Baat. This was an enlightening event for all the volunteers and a great learning opportunity.
NSS PO Planning Session

The NSS unit of Thakur College of Science and Commerce in collaboration with NSS cell University of Mumbai organized the NSS Annual Planning Session for Program officers of Mumbai Suburban Zone-2 and Palghar District on 31th August 2023 at the Seminar Hall of Thakur College of Science and Commerce.
The aim of this session was to inform and educate NSS POs of Mumbai Suburban Zone-2 and Palghar District on various topic related to NSS. All participating POs took a pledge for national betterment under the “Meri Mati Mera Desh” Scheme.
The first half of this session was addressed by Mr.Ramesh M. Deokar where he discussed about the breakdown of the required 120 and 240 hours completion during 2 years of NSS service. Later in that session Mr. Deokar also informed about various government schemes related to NSS and selection criteria for camps like NIC, NAC, Avhaan, and NRD. Mr. Sushil Shinde addressed the second half of the session where he covered topics like activity selection, association with NGOs, PFMS and its usage.
Swachhta hi Sewa Program

The NSS unit of Thakur College of Science and Commerce, under the Central Government Program of “Swachhta hi Seva”, organized a clean up drive at Manori Beach as well as Kalina campus. The volunteers picked up the garbage and debris that had accumulated on the beaches which included raw cloth pieces, plastic bottles, plastic bags, wrappers, and other materials that were detrimental to the environment and marine life. In the Kalina campus volunteers were divided into multiple groups and these groups assisted the cleaning staff to perform cleaning work around the campus.
Bhajan Sandhya on Gandhi Jayanti

On 2nd October, 2023 at the Gateway of India from 3 to 7 pm the University of Mumbai organized a Bhajan Sandhya on the auspicious event of 154th Gandhi Jayanti. Volunteers of NSS unit of Thakur College of Science and Commerce helped the university personnel with crowd control. 15 volunteers from the NSS unit of TCSC attended this event where they also took a pledge for ‘Swachh Bharat’
Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti Celebration

On the auspicious day of Shivaji Mharaj Jayanti, the University of Mumbai organized a celebration. Total 21 volunteers of NSS unit of Thakur College of Science and Commerce were enlighten with the knowledge on the life of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and importance of his mother in his life.

Ms. Prapti Ramashrey Yadav was selected for National Integration Camp Hissar Haryana.
Mr. Ashok Santosh Kushwaha was selected for National Adventure Camp (ABVIMAS) Himachal Pradesh.
Ms. Rashmi Narayan Tiwari was selected for National Republic Day Parade Camp 2024, Kartavya path, New Delhi.
Mr. Saurabh Anil Shrivastav was selected for State Republic Day Parade Camp 2024, Mumbai.
Ms. Khushi Himadri Dutta was selected for National Youth Festival, Nashik, Maharashtra.
Our NSS Unit has received 2 awards by honorable Vice Chancellor Prof. Ravindra Kulkarni, University of Mumbai in Western Zone for ‘Collecting the 2nd most Blood Units in a day at Railway Station’ that happened at Borivali Railway Station 2022-23 and for ’Collecting the most Blood Units in College level Blood donation camps.
Ms. Shraddha Gupta has been selected as the Best NSS Volunteer 2021-22 at University Level by University of Mumbai , She is also bestowed with Dr. Smt. Ushaben Mehta Endowment Scholarship for which she’ll be felicitated on 15th august at Mumbai.
