NSS Activities & Events in Academic Year 2024-2025



 

The NSS unit of Thakur College of Science and Commerce was established in 1999 and has been actively working towards addressing social issues and fostering community development. This year, the unit comprised 200 dedicated volunteers (Male-98, Female-102) who carried out various initiatives both within the college and across five adopted areas. Under the guidance of Programme officer Mr. Sushil Shinde and Dr. Manju Singhania. The unit remained committed to driving meaningful change in society. 

Through its continuous efforts, the NSS unit has contributed significantly to social welfare, inspiring students to take responsibility and work towards building a better and more inclusive community. 


AREA-BASED ACTIVITIES

 

Area Based Project 1: Tree Conservation at Manori


  • Activity 1: Tree Plantation and Conservation (Frequency: Every Sunday) 

 

Since 2009, the NSS unit has been actively involved in the tree plantation at Shri Gagangiri Maharaj Ashram in Manori, Malad (West). Spanning more than 75 acres, the unit adopted the ashram to transform its once-barren land into a thriving green space. Over the past 14 years, volunteers have dedicated their efforts to making it a lush forest, now recognized as the ‘Oxygen Hub’ of Mumbai. 

 

Every Sunday 20 to 60, volunteers engage in various activities to preserve the ashram’s natural beauty and support its functioning. 

 

These include: 

  • Tree plantation to enhance greenery. 

  • Watering and nurturing plants to ensure their healthy growth. 

  • Assisting ashram members in maintenance and conservation efforts 

 

Through consistent dedication, they continue to uphold the mission of environmental conservation and sustainability. This year over 50 saplings and 25 trees were planted by our volunteers.

  • Activity 2: Kojagiri Purnima (16th Oct 2024): 


The NSS unit of Thakur College of Science and Commerce, in association with Shri Gagangiri Maharaj Ashram in Manori, organized 'लक्ष लक्ष दीप सोहळा' on Kojagiri Purnima on 16th October 2024. 

 

Kojagiri Poornima is a Hindu festival celebrated on a full moon night, honoring Goddess Lakshmi. People stay awake, worship, and drink sweetened milk under the moon, dancing and enjoying the night away symbolizing prosperity and well-being. On this occasion our NSS unit accompanied and assisted the Ashram in organizing this successful event. A substantial number of devotees visited the Ashram on this propitious day. 'A night with priceless memories'. Diyas were arranged filled with oil and placed around the trees by volunteers. Various patterns and religious symbols were made with the help of the diyas to represent various significance. The crowd control and assistance were carried out by our volunteers. Diyas were lit by the devotees in the evening. Approximately two lakh diyas were lit. This festival or event was sacred and surreal for both the devotes and the volunteers who contributed their presence to this auspicious event.


Project 2: Paper Bag Making at College campus.


  • Activity 1: Paper bag making and Anti-plastic campaign. 

 

Our NSS unit constantly keeps on conducting paper bags making to carry out an Anti-plastic campaign. Where the objective is to avoid the use of plastic and opt for environmentally friendly alternatives. Here the volunteers of our unit make paper bags with old newspapers as a recyclable option and carry out the duty of distributing them to the local vendors in Thakur Village for at no cost. 


  • Activity 2: Paper bag making for female hygiene. 

This was also conducted by our volunteers at this time where bags were paper bags made and later given a government school where the girls could easily dispose of their sanitary pads in these disposable paper bags to avoid the spread of unwanted diseases and create a better and cleaner sanitary area.

Project 3: Medical Camp and Ration Distribution at Kosbad

(Frequency: Every Second Sunday of the Month)

Activity 1: Medical Checkups & Ration Distribution




Our NSS unit, in collaboration with Shri Satya Sai Seva Samiti (Kandivali, Borivali, Dahisar) has been organizing this monthly initiative for the past 3 years in Kosbad Village, Palghar. The project aims to provide free medical checkups and essential ration supplies to underprivileged tribal villagers. As part of this initiative, our NSS volunteers actively participate in organizing the medical camp, assisting doctors in delivering free healthcare services, and managing medical records of the patients. In addition to medical aid, volunteers also engage with the villagers through awareness sessions on crucial topics such as health, sanitation, and Gram Swachhata village cleanliness. 

 

During this project cycle: 

  • Tribal villagers received medical treatment. 

  • Ration kits were distributed to families in need.





Female volunteers, alongside members of the Satya Sai Seva organization, conducted menstrual hygiene awareness sessions for young girls and women. Stationery and books were distributed to children to support their education. Over the year lentils and rice were distributed, saplings were also provided to   villagers to encourage sustainable practices. Through this ongoing initiative, we strive to make a meaningful impact on the lives of the villagers by addressing their healthcare, nutritional, and educational needs, fostering a healthier and more self-sufficient community. This year our unit has donated 940 ration kits and 







Project 4: Blood Donation Drive 2024


Activity 1: Drive conducted in July. 

Two blood donation drives were organized and assisted by our NSS unit in collaboration with the Lions Club, organized a Blood Donation Camp on 13th and 18th July 2024. 

In preparation for the event, PR activities were conducted on 11th and 12th July 2024 within the TCSC campus and surrounding areas to raise awareness and encourage participation. 

 During the camp, NSS volunteers played a crucial role in organizing and managing the event. They assisted with donor registration, post-donation care, refreshments, and provided support to the medical staff throughout the drive.

  • 84 units of blood were donated. 

 

18th July 2024: -  

  • 61 volunteers participated. 

  • 61 units of blood were donated.


Activity 2: Drive conducted in December. 

Our NSS unit, in collaboration with the HDFC BANK, organized a Blood Donation Camp on 9th December 2024 and 10th December 2024. In the lead-up to the event, promotion activities were conducted on 3rd, 4th, and 5th December 2024 within the TCSC campus and surrounding areas to encourage participation. Both internal and external PR efforts were carried out by NSS volunteers to maximize outreach 

During the camp, NSS volunteers played a vital role by assisting with donor registration, distributing refreshments, providing post-donation care, and offering support to the medical staff throughout the campaign. 

 

Event Highlights: 

9th December 2024:  

  • 84 volunteers participated. 

  • 130 units of blood were donated. 

 

10th December 2024: 

  • 82 volunteers participated. 

  • 126 units of blood were donated. 

 

The initiative was a remarkable success, helping to strengthen blood reserves and promoting a sense of social responsibility and community service among students. 


Project 5: Rakhi Project

Our NSS unit in partnership with Seva Vivek NGO, initiated the Rakhi Project with a vision to empower Adivasi women by providing them with a platform to showcase and sell their handcrafted, eco-friendly bamboo Rakhi’s. 

Through this project, Adivasi women were trained in the art of bamboo handicrafts, enabling them to create unique and environmentally friendly Rakhi’s. By promoting these products, the project aimed to generate a steady source of income for the women, fostering economic empowerment within their communities. 15-20 volunteers actively participated daily.

Total no Rakhi sold: 320 Rakhi’s where sold. 

                                

 COLLEGE LEVEL PROJECTS 

 Session for yoga day 

 Date: 21st June 2024 

 

On 21st June 2024, the NSS unit of our participated in a yoga training session organized by the college to celebrate International Yoga Day. Volunteers were guided through 20 yoga poses recommended by the Government of India and introduced to meditation practices.


The session was graced by the principal, Srimati Chaitali Chakraborty, who shared her personal experience with yoga and emphasized its benefits in daily life. The event concluded with volunteers pledging to practice yoga with enthusiasm. A total of 11 NSS volunteers actively took part in this enriching session.

                                                                                                                                                                             

Such initiatives not only promote physical and mental well-being but also encourage students to adopt a healthier and more mindful lifestyle. The NSS unit looks forward participating in more such activities that contribute to the holistic development of its volunteers.


  1. 25th Kargil Vijay Diwas 

 

Date: 26th July 2024 

 



The 25th Kargil Vijay Diwas was held on 26th July 2024 to honor the bravery and sacrifice of the soldiers who fought in the Kargil War. The event featured an inspiring speech by Colonel Kaushal Kashyap, who highlighted the courage and dedication of the Indian Armed Forces. Tribute ceremonies and awareness sessions on national security and patriotism were conducted to instill a deeper sense of gratitude and responsibility among attendees. A total of 35 volunteers (16 male and 19 female) took part in the event, paying their respects, and gaining valuable insights into the sacrifices made by the soldiers for the nation. 

 


  1. MDACS redrun 2024 

 

Date: 11th August 2024 

 

Mumbai Districts AIDS Control Society (MDACS), an autonomous body registered under the Charitable Trust Act, was established on 27th July 1998 by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM). Its primary mission is the control and prevention of HIV/AIDS in Mumbai, focusing on creating awareness, offering support services, and promoting health and well-being within the community. As part of its efforts to engage the public and foster awareness, MDACS organizes the "Red Run" marathon, an event that underscores the importance of solidarity and active participation in the fight against HIV/AIDS.


On 11th August 2024, the "Red Run" marathon saw enthusiastic contributions from four NSS volunteers from many institutions. Their involvement exemplified the spirit of community service, as they played an active role in supporting the event's organization and execution. The participation of NSS volunteers not only highlighted their dedication to social causes but also reinforced the message of inclusivity and collective effort in addressing public health challenges. Through such initiatives, MDACS continues to inspire a collaborative approach to its mission, while empowering individuals to make a tangible impact in their communities.

 

 

  1. Har Ghar Tiranga Rally  

Date: 14th August 2024 

  

   



The Har Ghar Tiranga Rally was organized to instill patriotism, unity, and awareness about the significance of the Indian national flag. It was held on 14th August 2024. It encouraged community participation in celebrating Independence Day while reinforcing the values of freedom and responsibility. 


NSS Volunteers of our unit actively engaged in the rally, chanting patriotic slogans, and sharing inspiring quotes, spreading the spirit of national pride and unity. This project was a rally throughout our Thakur Village. Their efforts helped strengthen awareness, respect, and commitment to the ideals represented by the Tiranga. 



  1. Independence Day  

 

Date: 15th August 2024 

 

To make Independence Day event a huge success a practice session on day before it was carried out that was on 14.08.2024 .On the occasion of India’s 78th Independence Day 15th August 2024 , Thakur College of Science and Commerce and Thakur College of Engineering and Technology came together to celebrate the spirit of freedom and unity. The highlight of the event was the ceremonial hoisting of the Tricolor by the esteemed chief guest symbolizing the nation’s pride and resilience. 67 NSS Volunteers were present.


  1. Security Duty for Guest Lecture 

 

Date: 22nd & 23rd August 2024 

 

 



Volunteers were assigned security duties to ensure. 

smooth and organized guest lecture sessions. They managed seating arrangements, regulated entry, and exit, and kept discipline, creating a professional and orderly environment for both speakers and attendees. 

 

Total volunteer participation in the event was 20. Their efforts played a key role in the event’s success, ensuring a seamless experience for all participants. 

 

 

  1. Flashmob 

Date: 2nd September to 9th September 

The NSS volunteers of our unit performed a flash mob to promote Women Empowerment, capturing attention through energetic dance moves and impactful messaging. The performance aimed to highlight the importance of gender equality, education, and women's rights. Through synchronized movements and meaningful expressions, the volunteers conveyed a powerful social message, leaving an impression on the audience. 

 


           


  1. Seminar on Swami Vivekananda Ji 

On 11th September 2024, a Seminar on Swami Vivekananda Ji was conducted to inspire the youth by sharing his teachings and philosophies. The session focused on his immense contributions to education, spirituality, and nation-building, highlighting his role in shaping modern India and encouraging self-development among individuals. Eminent speakers discussed his impactful speeches, including his famous address at the Parliament of Religions in Chicago, and how his ideas are still relevant today. The seminar saw active participation, fostering a deep understanding of his vision for a progressive and empowered society. To ensure the smooth execution of the event, a dedicated team of nine volunteers (6 males and 3 females) efficiently handled various responsibilities such as event coordination, seating arrangements, and overall organization. Their efforts contributed significantly to making the seminar a well-organized and enriching experience for all attendees. 

 

  1. Ganesh Immersion 2024 

 

Dates: 8th September 2024 and 11th September 2024

It was a Ganesh Immersion project started by the “OM SAI NIRMALA KENDRA” organization where the volunteers of our unit assisted the organization with necessary help required. 


11-09-2024: 


The Ganesh Immersion and Security Duty at Marve took place on 11th September 2024 at Marve Beach, ensuring a smooth and safe visarjan (immersion) process. NSS Volunteers from our unit played a crucial role in managing crowds, controlling traffic, and helping devotees throughout the event. To enhance safety, special arrangements such as barricades, adequate lighting, and emergency response teams were put in place to prevent any mishaps. Authorities also promoted eco-friendly immersions by encouraging the use of artificial ponds, reducing the environmental impact on natural water bodies. The event was conducted peacefully, with seamless coordination between security forces and the community, ensuring a respectful and safe farewell to Lord Ganesha. 

 

  1. Beach Clean-Up at Marve Beach 

 

Date: 21 September 2024 

As a part of Swachhata Hi Seva initiative our NSS Unit organized a Beach Clean-Up Drive at Marve Beach to promote environmental awareness and cleanliness. Volunteers collected plastic waste, segregated biodegradable and non. 

biodegradable materials and educated locals on responsible waste disposal. 

 

The event successfully contributed to a cleaner beach and raised awareness about marine pollution. The initiative emphasized the importance of collective efforts in environmental conservation.

The event not only restored the natural beauty of the beach but also emphasized the importance of protecting marine ecosystems. By encouraging community participation, the initiative raised awareness about sustainable practices and the need for collective action in preserving natural spaces. 

 

  1. NSS Day Celebration

     Date: 24th September 2024 

 

Our NSS unit in collaboration with Montfort Orphanage, celebrated NSS Day with 60 enthusiastic volunteers. The event aimed to spread joy and foster social responsibility among volunteers and children alike. 

 

Volunteers organized drawing and singing activities, encouraging creativity and engagement. They also donated books, educational materials, and play objects, enriching the orphanage’s learning environment. The celebration beautifully reflected the NSS motto – “Not Me, But You” promoting service, compassion, and community spirit. 

 

  1. Campus Cleaning College at College  

 

Date: 25th September 2024 

 


The NSS Unit conducted a Campus Cleaning Drive on 25-09-2024 to promote cleanliness and hygiene. There were 13 volunteers to conduct this project. Volunteers were divided into teams to clean classrooms, corridors, and outdoor areas. Waste was collected and segregated properly. 

The event helped create awareness about keeping a clean environment. Despite minor challenges like waste disposal issues, the drive was successful, leaving the campus cleaner and greener.

 

  1. Visit to an old age home. 

 

Date: 26th September 2024 

On 26th September 2024, a group of 9 volunteers visited an Old Age Home to spend quality time with the elderly residents. Through engaging activities such as singing, games, and storytelling, the volunteers aimed to bring joy and companionship to the seniors. They listened to their stories, offering emotional support and reminding them that they are valued and appreciated. The visit created a warm and positive atmosphere, leaving both the residents and volunteers with cherished memories. 

 

  1. Rally for SWACCHATA HI SEVA 

 

Date: 10 October 2024 



   

NSS unit organized the Swachhata Hi Seva rally at Thakur Village as part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. NSS volunteers actively take part by carrying banners, chanting slogans, and engaging in cleaning streets and public spaces to promote cleanliness and hygiene. The event also featured awareness talks emphasizing the importance of waste segregation and hygiene, followed by a pledge to keep cleanliness. The rally successfully motivated the community to take responsibility for a cleaner environment, reinforcing the vision of a Swachh Bharat. 

 

  1. Beach Clean-Up Drive at Carter Road 

 Date: 2nd October 2024

 


The Beach Clean-Up Drive at Carter Road was organized on 2nd October 2024 to promote environmental awareness and encourage community participation in supporting cleanliness. Volunteers, equipped with gloves and garbage bags, gathered to remove plastic waste, litter, and other pollutants from the shoreline. The event also featured awareness talks on marine pollution and the importance of waste segregation. This initiative not only helped restore the beauty of Carter Road Beach but also reinforced the message of responsible waste disposal and environmental conservation, inspiring participants to take initiative-taking steps in preserving nature.

A Fertilizer Packing activity was held to support sustainable agricultural practices. Four volunteers took part in packing and organizing organic fertilizers for distribution among farmers. This initiative aimed to promote eco-friendly farming methods and raise awareness about the benefits of natural fertilizers in improving soil health. Through their efforts, the volunteers contributed to encouraging sustainable agriculture and environmental conservation.

  1. Taarangan

  1. Project Name: Security Duty for Cultural Program

The NSS Unit in collaboration with the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai, successfully organized a Pulse Polio Immunization Drive to protect the young generation of India from polio. 

As part of this initiative, three major drives were conducted by dedicated NSS volunteers, ensuring widespread immunization, and reinforcing India's polio-free status. To maximize outreach, immunization booths were strategically set up at multiple locations in Akurli and Damupada, making the vaccine easily accessible to the community.



  1. Crowd controlling for poster making at BMC School

Volunteers manage crowd control during a poster making competition at BMC school ensuring a smooth and organized environment for the participants the assisted in the distribution of materials guiding students and keeping order this allowed the competition to proceed efficiently and without any disruptions. Over 35 volunteers were present. 

 

  1. Army Day Celebration 

Date: 15th January 2025 

The Army Day Celebration was held on 15th January 2025 to honor the bravery, dedication, and sacrifices of the Indian Army. The event featured tribute sessions, patriotic performances, and discussions highlighting the importance of the armed forces. The event was a successful one just because of Lt Col Manoj Kumar Sinha and his memorable speech. Volunteers actively took part in various activities, helping to reinforce the spirit of patriotism and national pride. A total of 44 volunteers (18 male and 26 female) contributed to the success of the event, making it a memorable and meaningful occasion. 


  

  1. Makar Sankranti with (WAA) 

               Date: 16th January 2025 

 


When Makar Sankranti members of women and adolescent association (w a a) visited the college and conducted awareness session on social issues affecting women and adolescence. The sessions focus on gender equity, education, health and empowerment. The event also included interactive discussions and cultural activities engagement between students and waa representative. Volunteers actively took part in the sessions gaining valuable insights and spreading awareness with their community. The total number of volunteers who took part here was 29. 

  

  1. Tuberculosis Session 

Date: 25th January 2025 

Tuberculosis seminar a tuberculosis awareness seminar was conducted to educate participants about TB prevention symptoms and treatment options. Experts provide insights on early diagnosis and the importance of adherence to medication. Volunteers attended the event to enhance their knowledge and contribute to spreading awareness with their community. The total number of volunteers on the project was 24.

 

 

 

  1. Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao Rally by Women Police

On the 10th and 11th of August 2024, volunteers were assigned security duties at the Youth Fest held at our college to ensure a safe and well-organized environment for all participants and attendees. The AKSHARA Project was conducted on 28th September 2024 in collaboration with the NGO Akshara to promote gender equality and raise awareness about building a violence-free society. Volunteers actively participated in discussions on justice, equality, and liberty, reflecting on the core values enshrined in the Constitution. The NSS unit of Thakur College of Science and Commerce organized the NRD (National Republic Day) selection process as part of its ongoing activities to encourage student participation in national-level camps. The selection involved rigorous training and evaluation of NSS volunteers, ensuring they met the required criteria for representation at the NRD Camp in Delhi. The event was conducted with active participation from students and faculty, fostering a spirit of discipline and leadership among the volunteers.
